Caoimhe Foley Play Therapy

Caoimhe Foley Play Therapy "Toys are children's words and play is their language." Garry L. Landreth Carlow.

For over two decades, I've worn the hat of a primary school teacher in various settings, from bustling DEIS schools in Dublin to quaint country schools in Co. My journey in education allowed me to deeply understand the dynamics of children and parents. Intrigued by psychology and mental health, my own journey into motherhood propelled me to delve deeper into this realm. This exploration led me to

earn a Post Graduate Certificate and later a Diploma in Play Therapy from the National University of Ireland, Galway. Now, armed with a wealth of experience and a passion for helping children navigate the complexities of their emotions, I feel privileged to serve as a play therapist. I strive to create a space where children can freely express themselves and work through challenging feelings in a way that feels most natural to them – through the magic of play.

Back-to-school conversations don’t have to be all about grades, behavior, and doing your best.

Some of the most important things we can give kids as they head into a new school year are realistic expectations about what learning and growing actually look like.

There will be mistakes. Hard assignments. Friendship changes. Awkward moments. Days they feel confident and days they don’t.

Our job isn’t to convince them that every day will be great. It’s to help them understand that they can handle the days that aren’t.

When kids know that struggle is expected, not evidence that something is wrong, they’re much more willing to keep trying, ask for help, and take healthy risks.

Save this one for the first few weeks of school. 💙

This is SO important. This is where we all go wrong. This is my mission to sing from the rooftops as a chartered physiotherapist with a hypermobile (hEDS) body. Breathing & proprioception. AND nothing else. This is where we must begin. This is the only safe way to build a foundation with bodies like mine. Strengthening and stretching as a starting point will do damage though well intentioned it does our bodies harm. It doesn’t mean never stretch or strengthen. It does mean there is a journey to take with these bodies and strengthening is end of the line only when the body is ready. If there is already chronic pain then it may take time to get here. You are healing us with your patience, with your knowledge to go slow. To start here. To trust this process and trust that this and only this is what our bodies need to feel safe and gently build foundations. Please don’t try to strengthen and stretch us first even though that is what you learned in college. It’s what I was taught too but for Bodies Like Mine it is the wrong method to lead with. Foundations first.

Our Position on AI ‘Therapy’

We welcome innovation.
But not at the expense of safe, ethical care.

Alongside wider mental health bodies, there are growing concerns about the use of AI as a substitute for therapy.

AI tools may offer support in some areas.
However, they do not hold:

* clinical judgement
* ethical accountability
* responsibility for safeguarding

Therapy, particularly with children and young people, requires more than responses. It requires attunement, relationship, and professional training.

Presenting AI as a ‘therapist’ risks misleading individuals and families into trusting systems that are not equipped to support complex emotional needs.

As Play Therapists, we are clear:
AI should not be used as an alternative to qualified therapeutic support.

Because when it comes to children’s, young people’s and families wellbeing, there is no substitute for safe, human connection.
