💚💗 JUNE IS LIPOEDEMA AWARENESS MONTH 💗💚

Lipoedema is a chronic condition that causes an abnormal build-up of fat, most commonly in the legs, hips, buttocks, and sometimes the arms. It primarily affects women and is often misunderstood or mistaken for obesity or lymphoedema.

Common symptoms include:
✨ Disproportionately larger legs or arms
✨ Painful, tender tissue
✨ Easy bruising
✨ Heaviness and swelling
✨ Difficulty losing fat in affected areas despite diet and exercise.

Early diagnosis and appropriate management can make a significant difference in reducing symptoms and improving quality of life. Treatment may include compression therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, exercise, healthy nutrition, and ongoing support from a trained therapist. Managing Lymphoedema in Hot Weather ☀️

Hot weather can increase swelling and discomfort for people living with lymphoedema, but small daily habits can help keep symptoms under control.

💧 Stay hydrated – drinking plenty of water helps support your lymphatic system.
🧊 Keep cool – stay in shaded or air-conditioned areas where possible.
👕 Wear lightweight, breathable clothing to avoid overheating.
🦵 Elevate swollen limbs regularly to help reduce fluid build-up.
🚶 Gentle movement and walking can encourage healthy lymphatic flow.
💆‍♀️ Regular lymphatic drainage massage can help support drainage, reduce swelling, and ease discomfort during warmer weather.
🧴 Protect your skin – moisturise daily and avoid sunburn or insect bites.
🧦 Wear compression garments as advised by your therapist, especially during travel or long periods of sitting.

Be kind to your body during the heat and remember that consistency with your self-care routine can make a big difference

Living with lipoedema isn’t just about appearance, it’s about inflammation, pain, and how your body responds to what you give it

One of the most powerful (and often overlooked) tools in managing lipoedema is an anti-inflammatory approach to eating. While diet alone won’t “cure” the condition, it can make a real difference in how you feel day to day.

Think:
✨ Reducing processed foods and added sugars
✨ Prioritising whole, nutrient-dense meals
✨ Including healthy fats (like olive oil, nuts, seeds)
✨ Eating plenty of colourful vegetables and antioxidant-rich foods
✨ Staying hydrated

Inflammation can worsen swelling, tenderness, and fatigue — so supporting your body with foods that calm inflammation can help ease symptoms and improve quality of life.

Another supportive tool? Lymphatic drainage massage.
This gentle technique helps stimulate the lymphatic system, encouraging fluid movement and reducing buildup that can contribute to heaviness and discomfort. Many people with lipoedema find it helps with swelling, mobility, and overall comfort when done regularly.

This isn’t about restriction or perfection. It’s about giving your body support, consistency, and care.

If you’re navigating lipoedema, know that small, sustainable changes matter.

This does take practice. I often get my clients to do this before we start Lymphatic Drainage massage & here's why..

Your breath is one of the most powerful (and often overlooked) tools to support your lymphatic system

Deep diaphragmatic breathing acts like a natural pump for lymphatic flow. Unlike the heart, your lymphatic system doesn’t have its own pump. it relies on movement and pressure changes within the body.

When you breathe deeply into your diaphragm, Your diaphragm moves up and down

✨ This creates pressure changes in your chest and abdomen
✨ These pressure changes help move lymph fluid through vessels
✨ Supporting detoxification, reducing swelling & boosting immunity.

Shallow chest breathing? It limits this flow.
Deep, slow breathing? It stimulates it.

Try this simple practice: Inhale slowly through your nose, letting your belly rise
Exhale fully through your mouth, letting your belly fall
Repeat for 5 minutes daily (it does take practice 😀)

Small habit but really has powerful impact.
