🌿 Migraines Through the Lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, migraines are rarely viewed as having just one cause. Instead, they may reflect an imbalance involving Qi, Gán & Shén.

Some commonly described TCM patterns include:

🔸 Rising Gán— often associated with stress and emotional tension, and may present with throbbing headaches, irritability, dizziness, and sensitivity to light.

🔸 Gán Fire — may be associated with intense headaches, thirst, a bitter taste, facial flushing, and irritability.

🔸 Internal Gán Wind — may accompany migraines with symptoms such as vertigo, tremors, or blurred vision.

🔸Gán Qi Stagnation — often linked to emotional stress, with headaches that can fluctuate and worsen during periods of tension.

🔸 Gán & Shén Deficiency — traditionally associated with ageing and symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and poor sleep.

🔸 Phlegm & Dampness — may be associated with heaviness in the head, brain fog, and headaches.

🌱 TCM approaches that may support well-being include:
• Acupuncture
• Qigong
• Regular sleep and daily routines
• Identifying and reducing personal dietary triggers
• Calm breathing exercises
• Gentle self-massage of the head, neck, and shoulders

✨ TCM takes an individualised approach, so the underlying pattern and treatment can differ from person to person.

What Does Pain in the Sole of the Foot Mean in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)? 👣

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the location of pain on the sole of the foot may offer clues about energetic imbalances within the body. The feet symbolise our connection to the earth, our sense of balance, and our ability to move forward in life.

✨ Center of the sole (Shen)
This point is connected to the Shèn meridian. Pain here may reflect an imbalance in Kidney energy and can be associated with fatigue, fear, insecurity, or depleted vital energy.

🌿 Inner arch of the foot:
Linked to the Pí & Gān meridians, discomfort in this area may relate to excessive worry, emotional stress, or stagnant Qi (vital energy).

🦶 Heel:
Also associated with the Shèn meridian, heel pain may suggest a deficiency of energy or essence, particularly when accompanied by fatigue, lower back discomfort, or weakness in the legs.

🍃 Beneath the toes:
This region is connected to the Pí and Gān meridians. Pain here may reflect difficulty "digesting" life's experiences, persistent worry, or a tendency to overthink.

💚 A symbolic perspective:
In TCM, pain in the sole of the foot may also be seen as an invitation to slow down, reconnect with the present moment, find stability, and strengthen your connection with the ground beneath you.

Remember, these interpretations are based on Traditional Chinese Medicine principles and are not a medical diagnosis. Persistent or severe foot pain should always be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional.

July is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month 💙

Arthritis doesn't only affect older adults—it can impact children and teenagers too. With the right support, many young people with juvenile arthritis can enjoy a better quality of life.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), arthritis is known as Bi Syndrome (Painful Obstruction Syndrome). It is believed to occur when the flow of Qi (energy) and Xue becomes blocked, often due to the influence of Wind, Cold, Damp, or Heat affecting the joints.

TCM treatment aims to restore the smooth flow of Qi and Xue, helping to reduce pain, improve mobility, and support overall wellbeing. This may include:
✨ Acupuncture
🌿 Herbal medicine
🥗 Dietary and lifestyle recommendations
If you or your child is living with arthritis, acupuncture may help manage symptoms such as pain and stiffness as part of a broader treatment plan.

Menopause: The Second Spring in Traditional Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, menopause is not the end of vitality—it's the beginning of the Second Spring.

The ancient wisdom of TCM teaches that around age 49, a woman's Jing (vital essence) naturally transforms. The energy once devoted to reproduction doesn't disappear—it turns inward, nourishing wisdom, creativity, resilience, and inner strength.

When Qi and Yin are in harmony, this season can bring greater clarity, emotional balance, and a deeper connection to oneself.
Rather than seeing symptoms such as hot flashes, restless sleep, or irritability are not considered an unavoidable fate, TCM views them as signs of energetic imbalance that can be supported through nutrition, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and practices like Qi Gong.

The Second Spring is not about growing older—it's about blossoming in a new way.

🌞 The Stomach’s Morning Story (TCM) 🌞

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, between 7–9 a.m. the stomach’s energy is at its peak — a time to “light the digestive fire” and prepare the body for the day.

✨ A nourishing breakfast
✨ Warm foods and drinks
✨ Eating calmly and mindfully

They are believed to support digestion and energy.

TCM suggests avoiding rushing, skipping breakfast, or starting the day with very cold foods.

If your mornings bring hunger, heaviness, nausea, or discomfort, it may be a sign your digestive system needs more care.

🌿 A warm bowl of porridge, herbal tea, eggs, or cooked fruit can be a gentle way to begin the day.

🌸 Menstrual Cramps in the Language of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), menstrual cramps are often seen as a message from the body.

Imagine a river flowing smoothly through a landscape. When the water moves freely, everything is nourished and balanced. But when the river is blocked by obstacles or chilled by the cold, the flow slows down and discomfort appears.

TCM views the movement of Qi (vital energy) and Blood in a similar way. When their flow becomes stagnant—often due to stress, emotional tension, cold, or weakness in the body's energy—menstrual pain may arise.

To help restore harmony, TCM encourages warmth, nourishment, gentle movement, and emotional balance.

Warm the lower abdomen and keep the feet and lower back cosy.
Enjoy warm, nourishing foods such as soups, ginger, and other cooked meals. (Note: if Heavy bleeding, then a chamomilla tea )
Move gently with walking, Qigong, stretching, or mindful breathing to encourage the smooth flow of Qi.
Create space for rest and emotional well-being, as TCM associates stress and frustration with disruptions in the Liver's role of maintaining the free flow of Qi.

I was pleased to attend the UK Conference of Chinese Medicine this past weekend as part of the ACI delegation. The conference provided an opportunity to strengthen our links with the British Acupuncture Council and other UK TCM organisations, and to meet with our European partners to discuss TCM policy, partnerships, and future collaborative research initiatives—helping me stay at the forefront of developments in Chinese medicine for the benefit of my patients.

Baduanjin Qigong: Drawing the Bow to the Left and Right.

This powerful Baduanjin movement combines mindful posture, coordinated breathing, focused attention, and balanced movement to encourage the smooth circulation of energy throughout the body.
Benefits:
✨ Supports respiratory health and lung function
✨ Promotes balanced energy flow through the body's meridians
✨ Enhances concentration, coordination, and overall well-being
✨ Encourages symmetry and balance by working both sides of the body equally
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this exercise is closely associated with the Lung Meridian and Large Intestine Meridian. The positioning of the hands and fingers creates a gentle stretch through these pathways, particularly affecting the thumb and index finger, where these meridians terminate.
Through regular practice, "Drawing the Bow" can help cultivate vitality, balance, and a deeper connection between body and mind.
