Tonight Katie Taylor walks out for the final time in front of 82,000 people at Croke Park.

An Olympic gold medal in 2012, the year women's boxing first appeared at the Games. Five world titles and six European titles as an amateur. Undisputed champion at lightweight in 2019, all four belts at once. The first women's fight to ever headline Madison Square Garden. Undisputed at a second weight division. A trilogy with Amanda Serrano across three sold-out arenas that changed what people believed women's boxing could be.

Tonight she becomes the first fighter to headline Croke Park since Muhammad Ali in 1972.

One of the greatest careers Irish sport has ever produced. Good luck tonight, Katie.

Positive thinking and pre-game pep talks only reach about 5% of your conscious brain. But that sudden freeze reflex isn't a lack of disciplineโ€”it is hardwired directly into the other 95%, your subconscious survival circuit.

Think of it like this:

In training, youโ€™re in pure flow mode. You don't think about your mechanics or micromanage your handsโ€”your body just executes.

The second the pressure spikes, your survival brain misinterprets the fear of making a mistake as actual physical danger. To "protect" you, it activates an emergency brake right in the middle of your movement:

Your wrists, fingers, or shoulders lock up.
You start overthinking a motion youโ€™ve practiced thousands of times.
A tiny twitch or hesitation ruins your release.

When this happens, gritting your teeth and trying harder is like trying to stop a freight train with a bicycle brake. You cannot use 5% conscious willpower to fight a 95% subconscious survival response.

To stop it, you need a simple reset: the moment you feel the tension loading, take one deep physical exhale, shift your focus entirely to an external anchor (like the seam of the ball or your target), and run your reset cue.

Sports hypnosis takes this a step furtherโ€”bypassing the overthinking and updating the automated program directly at the root.

Once your nervous system stops treating high-stakes moments like an emergency, the physical freeze dissolves and your muscle memory takes back full control.

Stop fighting your own body. Fix the program running it.

Something taught you to play safe. A pass that got cut out. A shot a coach roared at. A game where you were the one blamed. Your mind decided risk was the danger and wrote a rule โ€” and it's been running it ever since without asking you.

It worked for a while. Fewer mistakes. You stayed on the pitch.

Then the bill arrived. The shots you didn't take. The selection that went to a lad with less ability who at least did something. A season of surviving matches instead of playing them.

Here's the part nobody says out loud. Coaches don't drop you for trying something that didn't come off. They drop you for doing nothing. So playing safe causes the exact thing it was built to stop.

Would you agree the training was never the problem? You still try the long ball on a Tuesday night. Nobody's dropping you at training.

"I play soccer, does this apply to me?"
"I fight, is this just for golfers?"
"I run, it's not really a mental sport, is it?"

You know the version of you that shows up in training. Loose. Fast. Deciding before you have finished thinking.

Then the whistle goes, or the bar is loaded, or the gun fires, and a different athlete walks out. Tight shoulders. Hands that do not feel like yours.

Afterwards you blame the pitch, the ref, the crowd, the lad you were marking. That story is comfortable, because it keeps the problem outside you. It also keeps the fix outside you. Which is why nothing you have tried has stuck.

Here is what over 15 years with competitive athletes has made obvious.

The sport changes the trigger. It never changes the mechanism.

Rugby players tighten before contact. Golfers over a four-foot putt. Hurlers standing over a placed ball. Powerlifters on the third attempt. Different moment, same freeze, one subconscious survival program firing at a different cue.

Duncan Casey, rugby. Liam Beville, powerlifting. Andrew Clair, running. Contact, strength, endurance. Three sports with nothing in common except the thing that was running underneath.

Would you agree that if the mechanism is the same across all of those sports, the fix does not need to know exactly what sport you play either?

I wrote the whole thing up, including what the trigger looks like in your sport and why sport-specific coaching keeps missing it. Link in the first comment.

That is what makes it unbearable. The reps are in. The footage is watched. The plan is one you could recite in your sleep. Then the moment arrives and something in you goes quiet in the wrong way.

Arthur Ashe said it plainly. One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.

He was right. But there is a second half of that sentence most athletes never train.

You prepared the skill. You never prepared the moment.

Your body knows the shot. It does not know the walk out, the silence before it, the eyes on you, the scoreline that has suddenly started to mean something. That is a separate rehearsal, and almost nobody does it.

Here is why gritting your teeth does not close the gap. Conscious tools reach about five percent of what happens under pressure. The freeze lives in the other ninety-five, in the part of you running old patterns that do not take instruction on the day.

So the confidence you genuinely earned in training never gets delivered where it counts.

Try this before your next session. Two minutes. Do not rehearse the skill. Rehearse the moment โ€” the walk out, the noise, the pause, the eyes โ€” until it stops feeling like a threat and starts feeling like something you have already been through.

If the preparation is already done and still is not showing up when it matters, doesn't it make sense to prepare the one part you have never trained.

That is what the free 7-Day Athlete's Edge Reset is built for. Seven days, one short session a day, aimed at the ninety-five percent. Link in the first comment.

How many more seasons are you willing to go in fully prepared and still frozen.

The athlete is quiet in the car. Slept badly. Answers in one word. Whatever is coming has already been happening to them for four days.

Seneca had this two thousand years ago. We suffer more in imagination than in reality.

Here is what is actually going on. Nobody competes once. They compete dozens of times before the day โ€” lying awake, driving, warming up, waiting โ€” and in almost all of those runs it goes badly. That is not weakness. The mind is scanning for danger and doing its job.

The trouble is the mind does not keep a separate folder for a rehearsed rep and a real one. Whatever gets run in detail, on repeat, with feeling attached, is being practised.

So by the start line, the collapse has had thirty-nine repetitions that week. The clean version has had none. Then everyone wonders why the training did not show up.

And afterwards it is almost never as bad as the version they were carrying. That gap between the two is where the freeze is built.

Here is something that works, and it takes two minutes. The night before, run it once โ€” clean. Watch it like footage first, calm, from the outside. Then run it again from behind their own eyes and let the feeling come. Every night until the day.

Even up the reps and a different version turns up.

If the week before is doing more damage than the day itself, doesn't it make sense to train that week rather than ignore it?

Today's All-Ireland final carries an extra storyline for one side โ€” Mayo's long wait since 1951, and the curse narrative that resurfaces every year they reach a final.

Set superstition aside and there's a real point underneath it: belief about one's own composure under pressure measurably affects performance under it. That's not folklore, it's a trainable mental state, and it applies well beyond sport.

The anchor technique is one practical example โ€” linking a small physical action to a state you've already felt at your best, built and rehearsed in advance so it's reliable when pressure hits. The part that determines whether it works: consistency in practice, not the action itself. The same cue, repeated in the same way, every time.

Years later, in his fifties, he set a Guinness World Record.

A year in casts. Six months in a wheelchair. He had to learn to walk again. Doctors set the limit โ€” Liam refused to sign it.

He went back to the gym on crutches. Later came a hip replacement, then a full knee replacement, then years of quiet work no one was watching. On 5 February 2022 in Limerick, he pulled 285kg off the floor โ€” a Guinness World Record, decades after he had been written off.

This week Guinness World Records shared his next chapter: Liam has written his memoir, Unbroken. His comeback, in his own words. As he puts it, disability doesn't mean inability.

The strength was always his. I was proud to play a small part on the mental side โ€” the mindset work and hypnosis, helping him stay calm when the bar felt heaviest. The training is rarely the problem. Under real pressure the body is ready long before the head is, and Liam learned to quiet the 95% that trying harder can't reach.

"๐—๐—จ๐—ฆ๐—ง ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—Ÿ๐—”๐—ซ."

If you've ever heard it right before the moment that matters โ€” and felt yourself tense up even more โ€” this one's for you.

You've put in the years. The training is in your body. Then the pressure arrives and that same body stops listening: shallow breath, tight chest, a mind that's anywhere but here. And afterwards comes the quiet question you'd never say out loud โ€” am I just not built for the big moments?

You are. Here's the mechanism nobody explains. "Relax" is a conscious command, and the conscious mind runs about 5% of you. The freeze lives in the other 95% โ€” a subconscious survival program that reads pressure as danger and hits the brakes before thought gets a vote. You can't out-argue it on the day. The advice fails. You don't.

But that program was learned, and anything learned can be re-learned: prime the state, trigger it on cue, rewire the pattern, lock it in โ€” until calm is your default setting instead of something you chase.

Would you agree the training was never the problem? Then give the other 95% seven days.
