At Lusk Orthodontics, we pride ourselves on investing in great technology and modern orthodontic techniques. But above all, we believe in investing in people.

We have been incredibly fortunate to have Lisa as part of our team. From day one, she has demonstrated exceptional organisation, clinical skill and, most importantly, genuine care for our patients. Her contribution to Lusk Orthodontics has been immense.

Orthodontics is a team sport, and delivering world-class care requires a world-class team. Lisa has consistently exceeded our expectations and has played a vital role in our journey at Lusk Orthodontics from the very beginning.

One of the reasons we started Lusk Orthodontics was to create a place where talented, hardworking people could grow, develop and progress in their careers. We take great pride in seeing our team members achieve their ambitions.

That is why, although we will miss Lisa immensely, we are incredibly proud that she is beginning her next chapter with university training in Dental Hygiene. 🎓

This is a particularly impressive achievement. Places are highly competitive, with only a small number of candidates accepted each year. Lisa thoroughly deserves this opportunity, and we could not be happier for her.

This is not really goodbye. We hope to welcome Lisa back to Lusk Orthodontics in the future in a different role, continuing to care for our patients throughout their orthodontic journeys.

We are also incredibly grateful to the rest of our fantastic team, who will carry the baton and continue delivering the high standard of care our patients have come to expect.

Lisa, thank you for everything you have brought to Lusk Orthodontics. We are very proud of you and excited to see where this next chapter takes you.

Once part of the Lusk Orthodontics team, always part of the team. 🖤💛

So, where does myofunctional therapy fit?

I see it as an adjunct, something that can support the correct treatment, rather than replace it.

Following orthodontic expansion or ENT treatment, it may help address persistent tongue posture, swallowing patterns and orofacial muscle habits. However, success depends heavily on consistently performing the prescribed exercises.

Is it magic? No.
Is it pseudoscience? I don’t think that’s accurate either.

Think of it as orofacial and upper-airway rehabilitation: potentially beneficial when properly diagnosed, appropriately prescribed and used alongside conventional treatment.

Keep an open mind, but a critical one too. 🦷

At Lusk Orthodontics, the TMJ is part of the orthodontic diagnosis, not an afterthought. 🦷

A comprehensive orthodontic assessment should look beyond tooth alignment and include the temporomandibular joints (TMJs), jaw function and surrounding structures.

🔎 In selected patients, particularly those with TMJ symptoms, abnormal jaw function, facial asymmetry or concerning clinical or radiographic findings, a more detailed assessment may be needed. TMJ findings can influence treatment planning, biomechanics and even the choice of orthodontic appliance.

At Lusk Orthodontics, we use advanced digital imaging and diagnostic technology where indicated to improve the accuracy and depth of our assessment. 💻

A thorough diagnosis helps us plan treatment appropriately and provide the best possible care for our patients. ✨

MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY: DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK?

Miracle treatment or pseudoscience? The evidence says: neither.

Myofunctional therapy is essentially physiotherapy for the muscles of the mouth and throat.

📚 Research suggests it may help improve tongue function, swallowing, snoring and some aspects of sleep-disordered breathing.

But it has limits.

🦷 It won’t grow an adult jaw.
📐 It won’t correct a significant skeletal problem.
✨ It won’t replace orthodontics.
🌬️ It won’t remove a physical airway obstruction.

Myofunctional therapy can be a valuable adjunct—when used for the right patient, for the right reason.

Evidence over extremes. 🎯

🦷 Small problem. Right timing. Big difference.

This young patient started early orthodontic treatment at 8 years old to correct an anterior crossbite affecting a lower incisor.

Just 6 months of clear aligners achieved an ideal overjet and overbite, protecting the affected tooth and gum and naturally stabilising the result — no retainers needed.

🌱 He is now simply being monitored as his adult teeth erupt.

At Lusk Orthodontics, we believe in early treatment when it is genuinely needed — and waiting when it isn’t.

High-tech retention, designed for the long term. 🦷

Finishing orthodontic treatment is only part of the journey. Keeping the teeth in their new position is just as important.

At Lusk Orthodontics, we offer high-precision CAD/CAM fixed retainers, digitally designed and custom-made to fit precisely to the back of your teeth.

These metal-free, digitally manufactured retainers provide:

• Exceptional precision and a customised fit
• Excellent durability for long-term retention
• A smooth, discreet profile behind the teeth
• Reliable support to help keep your teeth straight and beautiful
• Careful positioning of the upper retainer so the lower teeth do not bite directly onto it, reducing unwanted contact and helping protect the retainer

Retention should never be an afterthought. The design, position and fit of a fixed retainer are all important when we want an orthodontic result to remain stable for many years.

Beautiful orthodontic results deserve equally precise retention.

We are incredibly proud that Dr Erfan Salloum is the premier provider of customised lingual orthodontics in Ireland and one of the leading WIN lingual orthodontic providers in Europe.

Here he is with Prof. Dirk Wiechmann, the inventor of the WIN system and one of the pioneers of modern customised lingual orthodontics.

Dr Salloum has trained extensively with Prof. Wiechmann and continues to learn directly from the clinicians who have developed and refined the techniques we use today.

Continuing to learn is part of how we bring highly specialised, completely invisible orthodontic treatment to our patients at Lusk Orthodontics.

That expertise allows us to offer patients a truly invisible treatment option — custom-made braces fitted behind the teeth, combining discretion with the precision and control of fixed orthodontic appliances.

When it comes to highly specialised treatment, experience matters. And so does continuing to learn from the very best.

To extract, expand… or both? 🦷🤔

This teenager presented with severe upper crowding, a blocked-out canine and two congenitally missing lower premolars, with the retained baby teeth beginning to submerge.

The big decision: keep the spaces for future implants or close them orthodontically?

After discussing all options, we chose a combination of expansion and extraction, creating space for the upper canine while closing the spaces of the missing lower premolars.

Treatment was completed with conventional fixed metal braces in under two years. ✨

The lower incisors remained slightly under-torqued at the end — not textbook perfect, but an acceptable compromise within an otherwise stable, functional and well-coordinated result.

Sometimes it’s not extraction OR expansion. The right treatment plan can involve both. 🎯

To extract, expand… or both? 🦷🤔

This teenager came to Lusk Orthodontics with a combination of problems we regularly see in growing patients: significant crowding of the upper teeth with a blocked-out canine, as well as two missing lower premolars. The baby teeth were still present but had started to submerge or “sink” below the level of the surrounding teeth.

When permanent teeth are naturally missing, there isn’t always one straightforward solution. The decision often comes down to whether we maintain the spaces for future replacement teeth, such as dental implants, or use orthodontics to close the spaces completely.

After discussing the advantages and disadvantages of each approach, we decided on a combination of expansion and extraction treatment.

The upper arch was expanded to help create the space needed to bring the blocked-out canine into position. In the lower arch, we chose to close the spaces from the missing premolars rather than preserve them for future implants. This also created more room further back for the wisdom teeth to hopefully erupt comfortably in the future.

The entire treatment was completed using conventional fixed metal braces in under two years. ✨

As with many real-life orthodontic cases, the result wasn’t absolutely textbook in every detail. The lower incisors remained slightly under-torqued at the end of treatment, which was not ideal from a finishing perspective, but represented an acceptable compromise within an otherwise stable, functional and well-coordinated result.

Good orthodontic treatment isn’t always about choosing extraction OR expansion. Sometimes achieving the right result means carefully combining both. 🎯
