A retained (unintegrated) Spinal Galant reflex is a primitive reflex often linked to bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) in older children. Normally, this reflex helps a baby rotate in the womb and should integrate by 9 months of age. When it persists, the bladder and nervous system can be misaligned, leading to involuntary nighttime urination.The ConnectionIn infancy, touching or stroking the side of a baby’s lower back causes the hips to curve toward that side, accompanied by an automatic release of the bladder. If this reflex does not integrate, the nervous system never fully separates that tactile stimulation from the urination response.
At night, if the child’s lower back brushes against restrictive waistbands, pajamas, or even the bedsheets, it can act as a trigger, prompting the bladder to empty without the child ever consciously waking up.
