Nollaig na mBan history………….
‘Women’s Christmas is a day that was traditionally celebrated in the south of Ireland, in particular counties Cork and Kerry and in rural Irish towns where there was a rich Nollaig na mBan culture and tradition.
Traditionally, Women’s Christmas was invented to give thanks to women, particularly mothers, for the hard work they put into Christmas preparation and all of their hard work both before and after Christmas. In old Ireland, women played a traditional role in the household. They spent their time cooking, cleaning and looking after their children while their husbands went to work.
Irish women put a lot of time and effort into the Christmas period. Although God received a day of rest on the seventh day of Christmas, Irish mothers didn’t take a break until the twelfth day of Christmas.
Although the role of women has changed in Ireland, the history of Nollaig na mBan is still a huge part of Irish culture and a tradition still practiced by some’
