Diabetes Ireland is delighted to welcome the publication of the ‘Diabetes Policy and Services Review Report: A Strategy for Better Care’. The priorities outlined – including, but not limited to, improved access to care and treatment based on clinical need, enhanced psychological supports and transition services, as well as the development of a diabetes registry and audits - have the potential to significantly improve care for people living with diabetes across Ireland.


This report marks not the end of the journey, but the beginning of a significant opportunity and the very important phase of implementation. Diabetes Ireland will continue to work closely with the Department of Health and the HSE and will strongly advocate over the coming years to ensure that the priorities outlined in the strategy are fully realised for all people living with diabetes, and for those at risk of developing diabetes, throughout Ireland.

What kind of doctor will society need in 2040?

The doctor of 2040 will be less of a “walking encyclopedia” and more of a health architect.

A physician able to do seven essential things:

1. Prevent before treating
Not waiting for abdominal obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, dementia, cancer, back pain or frailty to appear, but identifying biological and metabolic risk decades earlier and intervening proactively.

2. Use AI without being controlled by it
AI will generate differential diagnoses, interpret imaging, summarize literature, and support decision-making. The physician’s role will be to validate, contextualize, explain, and take responsibility for clinical decisions.

3. Integrate biology, data, and the person
Genomics, metabolomics, microbiome science, wearable data, biomarkers, and imaging must be integrated with the patient’s real life: sleep, nutrition, stress, family, work, behavior, and social context.
4. Prescribe lifestyle as serious medicine
Nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress reduction, pharmacology, surgery, and digital therapeutics will become part of one integrated therapeutic strategy rather than separate domains.

5. Manage complexity and chronic disease
Patients in 2040 will often be older, multimorbid, and taking multiple medications. Physicians will need systems thinking, not silo-based medicine.

6. Communicate, motivate, and build trust
Knowledge alone will not be enough. Doctors must help patients change behavior, navigate misinformation, and translate complex science into practical action.

7. Remain deeply human and ethically grounded
In an era dominated by algorithms and predictive medicine, the uniquely human value of physicians will be judgment, empathy, ethical reasoning, compassion, and responsibility.

In summary:

The physician of 2040 will be a digitally fluent clinician-scientist, prevention-oriented, technologically sophisticated, and profoundly human, using advanced tools to preserve health, function, and dignity across the lifespan.

Research study exploring young women’s emotional recovery after stroke or heart event ❤️

Have you experienced a stroke or heart event before age 50? You are not alone. Many young women face unique challenges, balancing recovery with family, work, and future plans.

This research study is a collaboration between the University of Galway and Croí Heart & Stroke Charity, inviting you to share your journey and shape better support for women like you.

You Are Eligible If You…
• Are a woman aged 18–50
• Have experienced a stroke or heart event at any stage
• Feel ready to explore emotional recovery in a supportive group setting

What’s Involved?
• Take part in Activate Your Life: a short Croí wellbeing programme
• Attend weekly 1.5-hour in-person sessions for 8 weeks at Croí House, Galway (April 15th–June 3rd, 7:30–9:00pm)
• Afterwards, share your experiences in a relaxed, one-to-one interview

• Learn tools to manage worry, sadness, or anger
• Use your voice to shape future recovery & wellbeing support for younger women across Ireland

The importance of visibility on our roads cannot be understated, particularly for vulnerable road users including pedestrians, cyclists, e-scooter drivers and motorcyclists.

Now that we have your attention, we are urging all road users to:

✅ Wear or use high-visibility clothing and accessories

✅Use appropriate lighting on bicycles, motorcycles, e-scooters and vehicles

✅Drive using dipped headlights at all times of day during the winter period

✅Slow down and anticipate vulnerable road users, allow extra space for overtaking on rural roads in particular

✅Be extra vigilant during hours of low light

As Ireland enters the darkest months of the year, the message is simple: If you can be seen, you can be safer.
