**HALLOWEEN PET SAFETY TIPS**

Halloween is fast approaching and with this comes bright lights, loud noises and unfamiliar faces. This can be a time of high stress for our pets so we'd like to offer a few tips to keep the weeks ahead less stressful.

🎃 Start desensitisation and behavioral preparation in advance, Fireworks are starting earlier every year.

🎃 Provide a safe, secure space indoors with familiar bedding, toys, water and calming background noise (TV or music)

🎃Keep all doors, windows and gates securely shut.

🎃 Start walks early in the morning and avoid the later evenings, remember to keep your dog on a leash at all times.

🎃Make sure your pet is microchipped and ensure the registered contact details are up to date. We are happy to help you check this and will provide guidance if any details need to be updated.

🎃Natural supplements such as vetpro stress and anxiety capsules are available to purchase in the clinic and can be given at meal times to help reduce symptoms. Feliway and Adaptil diffusers/sprays for both cats and dogs are also effective in managing and reducing stress levels.

Have a spooktacular month ahead and remember to keep the sweets out of reach. Don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any concerns about your pets well-being. Happy Halloween from all of us at Brittas vets. ✨👻

✨Cassie✨
Today Cassie called into us for her regular groom. 🫧🐶 Basic Health checks are included with all our grooms.

While brushing out Cassie, Ceire noticed that her right ear was looking more red and had more dirt present. This was the perfect opportunity to swab the ear and do an ear cytology.

This is a quick test where we collect the discharge on a cotton bud and roll it onto the microscope slide. The slide is then dipped in solution and allows us to identify yeast, bacteria and parasites under the microscope.

Luckily no abnormalities were detected and Cassie just required a good ear clean! 🙌🏼 Swipe to check out how cute Cassie was looking after her groom 💕

Pebbles, Lucky and Cosmo were in with us a few weeks ago and availed of our best start kitten package. They are now fully vaccinated and ready to take on the world. 😺

This morning we had Pebbles and Cosmo return to us as they were ready to be neutered. How cute are they, enjoying some post op "Tea and Toast" recovery food! 🫶🏼✨😺

Why do rabbits need their teeth clipped ?🐰

Rabbits need their teeth trimmed because their teeth grow continuously throughout their lives and must be worn down by chewing fibrous food.🥕🥗

Why Overgrowth Happens

Continuous growth: A rabbit’s teeth (incisors and back molars) never stop growing.

Lack of natural wear: Wild rabbits wear their teeth down by constantly grazing on tough, abrasive grass and hay. Pet rabbits often lack this natural grinding if fed a soft diet or too many pellets instead of hay.

Malocclusion: Some rabbits have a genetic misalignment of the jaw (malocclusion) where upper and lower teeth do not meet properly, meaning they cannot grind each other down naturally at all.

The Dangers of Overgrown Teeth

Painful spurs: Back molars can develop sharp points (spurs) that grow into the rabbit's tongue and cheeks.

Facial and jaw damage: Overgrown front incisors can curl up like tusks, piercing the gums or the roof of the mouth.

Infection and fatal refusal to eat: Dental pain makes eating and grooming nearly impossible, which can quickly lead to severe gut slowdown (GI stasis) and fatal complications.

Note: Traditional "clipping" with standard clippers can shatter the tooth and damage the root. Professional veterinarians often prefer to grind down or shorten teeth safely using an electric burr tool, often under a light anaesthetic.

Last Thursday we said " see you later" to our Siobhan😢. After 10 years in Brittas, Siobhan is moving on to a new adventure. Instead of caring for our four legged friends she will be caring for the two legged. Her care for our clients, patients and colleagues was always a constant. We can't express how much we will miss her, especially that smile😁. Always more than a coworker, she will always be a best friend to us all🥰 Best of luck Tay Tay, and we'll see you soon❤️❤️❤️
