In the current pandemic, pressures on work, home life, and fears about health are creating significant daily stress. This means our bodies are releasing a lot of cortisol – the primary stress hormone. But high cortisol levels actually suppress the immune system. By taking time to release some of those stress hormones, we will cope better and feel better.

In 2017, scientists demonstrated that cortisol levels were significantly lower in people who practiced diaphragm breathing exercises, and that deep breathing from the diaphragm has a positive effect on mental function and mental health (Ma et al., 2017).
