Today I had another MRI.

A few weeks ago, it was another ultrasound.

For almost my entire adult life, there has always been another appointment, another scan, another procedure, another result to wait for.

And eventually, it takes its toll.

I am emotionally, financially and medically exhausted.

Chronic illness doesn’t only affect your body. It affects your finances, friendships, social life, independence and mental health. Medical trauma follows you home - and sometimes the smallest thing can bring you straight back to an experience you thought you had processed.

I’ve also written about why I will never medically crowdfund again, the isolation of feeling unheard as a patient, and what happens when you spend so long surviving that one day you realise life has continued around you.

I don’t want my diary to be a medical diary.

I don’t want to simply survive my life.

I want to live it.

“Women may be the one group that grows more radical with age.” - Gloria Steinem

As the world says goodbye to one of feminism’s most recognisable voices, I’ve been reflecting on decades of activism - and on something I think we need to talk about more.

Credit.

Collaboration.

Competition.

The women who came before us.

The women working beside us.

And the women who will come after us.

Activism isn’t a race for the next interview, podcast, documentary, protest or seat at the table.

These are tools for creating change - they are not trophies.

We don’t have to agree.

We don’t have to campaign in the same way.

We don’t even have to like each other.

But we can respect each other’s contribution.

We can give credit where credit is due.

And we can remember that another woman’s visibility does not diminish our own.

The microphone is not the movement. The women are the movement.

There is enough room around the bonfire for all of us - just remember to credit the women who gathered the wood before you arrived. 🔥🌕

57 women have now undergone endometriosis surgery abroad through ESAIS.

That is progress - but it also raises a bigger question:

What happens to the patients who are too complex even for the overseas pathway?

In my latest Substack, I look at ESAIS, the gaps still remaining in Ireland’s National Endometriosis Framework, the cost and trauma of travelling for care, crowdfunding for treatment, fertility grief, and why Ireland ultimately needs its own Endometriosis Centre of Excellence.

Earlier diagnosis matters.

But we cannot forget the women who were left waiting for too long.

Ireland should not be exporting its endometriosis patients. We should be building the expertise to care for them here.

€645,000.

That’s the fine handed to the HSE following an investigation into the storage and retention of sensitive medical records.

At the same time, we have a reported €127,000 cycle hub at University Hospital Kerry and a new €8m+ Women’s Health Hub in Tralee - yet Kerry still isn’t home to a specialist endometriosis centre under the National Endometriosis Framework.

Imagine if €645,000 had been invested in specialist medical training instead.

Training doctors, surgeons, radiologists and multidisciplinary teams. Building expertise here. Reducing the need for patients to travel abroad to access specialist healthcare.

Investment in buildings matters - but we also need investment in the expertise inside them.

Patients deserve better. Taxpayers deserve accountability.

Who gets to decide who belongs in the room?

This wasn’t an easy piece to write.

It’s about patient advocacy, the idea of an “underground advocacy group”, hierarchy, exclusion, online behaviour, the impact it can have offline - and why I believe we need to talk about it.

I’ve cried. I’ve questioned whether to walk away. I’ve kept the receipts. And I’ve stood back up.

Most importantly, I still believe there is room for all of us.

Because women supporting women cannot be conditional on compliance.

✨ A decade ago today, I became a published co-author.

What makes today even more incredible is looking at the exact same date across three consecutive years:

2014 - Trading at Electric Picnic with The Gluten Free Kitchen Company.
2015 - In hospital undergoing an UAE.
2016 - A published co-author, with my business featured in a book alongside case studies involving Google, illy Coffee and Bord Bia’s Origin Green.

Three years. One exact date. Three completely different realities.

Sometimes you have to look back to realise just how much life you’ve actually lived. 🌸
