If you have PCOS—or someone close to you does—this month is for you.

Throughout September, we’ll be sharing a series of evidence-based, practical and easy-to-understand posts about PCOS.

Not just the usual list of symptoms.

We’ll explore:

• What’s actually happening inside the body
• The connection between PCOS and metabolism
• Weight and PCOS
• Fertility and reproductive health
• Sleep, stress and wellbeing
• Long-term health
• Common beliefs about PCOS that deserve a closer look

And most importantly, we’ll explain the “why” behind the symptoms and health changes, so you can build a better understanding of PCOS—not just memorise a list of facts.

Stay connected throughout the month.

By the end of it, our aim is simple:

You should understand your PCOS better than you did at the beginning.

**What happens in a Lifestyle Medicine consultation?**

It’s not simply another appointment where you describe your symptoms and leave with a prescription.

A Lifestyle Medicine consultation looks at the bigger picture:

• Your medical history and current health
• Nutrition and eating patterns
• Physical activity and movement
• Sleep and stress
• Daily routines and behaviours
• The factors that may be making change difficult

The goal isn’t to replace appropriate medical treatment.

It’s to understand what may be driving or worsening your health problems—and where lifestyle changes can become part of your treatment plan.

Because good healthcare isn’t only about treating what’s happening today.

It’s also about helping you improve your health for the years ahead.

Not sure where to start with your health?

Weight changes, low energy, metabolic concerns, sleep, hormones or other ongoing issues don't always fit neatly into one box.
Sometimes you need focused support for weight and obesity. Sometimes, the bigger picture needs looking at—your nutrition, sleep, stress, hormones, activity and metabolic health together.
That's why we offer two different GP-led consultation options, depending on what you need.
If you're unsure which is right for you, get in touch. We can help you choose.

One thing I often remind patients is that getting older doesn't mean giving up on being active. It means understanding that your body changes—and your approach may need to change with it.
What worked well in your 30s may not be the best approach in your 50s or 60s.
For many people, this means paying more attention to maintaining muscle and bone strength, recovery, balance and overall fitness rather than simply trying to exercise harder.
There isn't one right approach for everyone. The important thing is finding activity that suits your health, abilities and stage of life.

Lifestyle Medicine is not about chasing symptoms one at a time.

It looks at the habits and factors that are driving health in the first place—nutrition, sleep, stress, physical activity, and our daily environment.

For some chronic conditions, changing these factors can improve health significantly and, in some cases, even help put disease into remission.

As a GP, I believe prevention and treatment can go hand in hand.

Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can affect the brain as well as the body, influencing mood, sleep, concentration, and overall wellbeing.
The important thing is not to dismiss these changes as something you just have to accept.
If these symptoms are affecting your daily life, it's worth talking to your GP. There are a range of approaches that may help, including lifestyle changes, and for some women, medical treatments may also be appropriate. The right approach depends on your individual symptoms, health, and preferences.
You don't have to navigate this transition alone.

Calories matter, but they're only part of the story.

The foods those calories come from can influence your blood sugar, appetite, energy levels, and long-term metabolic health in very different ways.

That's why Lifestyle Medicine looks beyond numbers and focuses on the quality of the food we eat.

Did this change the way you think about calories?

Many people tell me they feel frustrated by their sugar cravings.
They often assume it's a lack of willpower.
But that's not always the case.
A poor night's sleep can affect the hormones that regulate hunger and fullness. It can also increase activity in the brain's reward centres, making sugary and high-calorie foods feel much more appealing the next day.

In other words, your cravings may not simply be a question of self-control. They may be your body's response to not getting the rest it needs.
This doesn't mean every craving is caused by poor sleep, but it's a reminder that our everyday habits are closely connected. Sometimes, improving your sleep is one of the first steps towards improving your eating habits too.
Understanding why your body behaves the way it does can be far more helpful than blaming yourself for it.

One of the things I enjoy most about Lifestyle Medicine is helping people see the body differently.

Many of the processes that protect our health happen quietly, without us ever noticing. Understanding them can completely change the way we think about everyday habits.
