A little time for you 💛

Strength and Restore Parent Class returns this September for parents of children with additional needs.

Each session begins with an exercise class, combining resistance training and cardio, followed by time to slow things down with relaxation and yoga.

The class is about looking after your own physical and mental wellbeing, while also having the opportunity to connect with other parents who understand some of the demands that come with caring for a child with additional needs.

📅 Starting Tuesday 15th September
⏰ 9:45–11:00am
📍 Kids Physiotherapy Waterford
💛 FREE

The class runs as a 6-week block. Places are limited, so we ask that you only register if you feel you can attend most of the six sessions.

All fitness levels are welcome and no previous exercise or yoga experience is needed.

Please put “Parent Class” in the subject line.

Or if you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Part 4: Interoception

How do you know when you’re hungry, thirsty, tired — or becoming unwell?

Interoception is our sense of what is happening inside our body.

Our nervous system is constantly receiving information about things like our heartbeat, breathing, hunger, thirst, temperature, bladder, gut, pain and fatigue.

But noticing a signal is only part of the story. We also need to interpret it, make sense of it and work out what our body might need.

And we don’t all experience these signals in the same way.

Some body signals may be difficult to notice. Others may be very noticeable or intense. Sometimes we notice something but struggle to understand exactly what it means.

Our experience of these signals can also change. Stress, sleep, health, attention, environment and previous experiences may all influence what we notice and how we interpret it.

This can have very real effects on everyday life — from recognising hunger or thirst to understanding pain, fatigue, discomfort or even recognising that we may be becoming unwell.

Interoception is just one part of our interconnected sensory and nervous system, but it can have an important influence on how we feel, move and function.

Understanding the individual person and how they experience their body comes first.

Had you heard of interoception before?

A useful resource for families looking for adaptive clothing and footwear 👟

I was recently contacted by Keeks, an Irish family-run business specialising in adaptive footwear, clothing and sensory-friendly products for children and adults.

They stock a range of products that may be particularly useful for some of the families we work with, including:

• AFO-friendly footwear and socks
• Easy-on/easy-off shoes
• Seamless and sensory-friendly clothing
• Full zip-on trousers
• Weighted collars
• Bibs and bandanas
• Sensory and chewy products

Keeks was founded from the owners’ own experience of trying to source suitable adaptive footwear and clothing for their son, and they now stock a growing range of adaptive brands and products.

They have also very kindly offered families following Kids Physiotherapy Waterford 10% off using the code:

KPW10

You can find out more at www.keeks.ie or Keeks 🦊

We don’t receive any commission or financial benefit from purchases — just sharing a potentially useful resource for families who may benefit.

I’m delighted to be getting ready for another block of Kids Physiotherapy Waterford classes and programmes starting this September! 🌟

I’ve really enjoyed running these groups and, for me, one of the best parts has been seeing the children playing, moving and working together.

There’s something really special about learning alongside other children. I’ve been amazed at how much they encourage and motivate one another and how often children will work that little bit harder, keep trying for longer, or have another go at a difficult skill when they’re part of a group.

And, importantly, we have lots of fun along the way! 😊

September start dates

MovementLab 2 & 3 — Wednesday, 2nd September

MovementLab 1 — Thursday, 3rd September

Sports Ready — Tuesday, 15th September

If you’re interested in booking a space for your child, or would like to find out a little more about the classes and whether they might be suitable, please get in touch:

📧 [email protected]

When getting in touch, it would be really helpful if you could include:

• Your child’s age
• A brief idea of what you would like them to get from the group

I’m really looking forward to welcoming everyone back and hopefully meeting some new faces too! 😊

Part 3: Your Child's Protective System

The nervous system is designed to protect us. But sometimes protection can become overprotective.

Pain, fear, anxiety, muscle tension, caution and avoidance can all be part of our protective biology. These responses are not inherently bad. They can be essential for keeping us safe.

But our nervous system doesn't respond only to what is happening right now. It also uses previous experiences, context, expectations and information from our body and environment to work out how much protection might be needed.

And importantly, the protective system learns.

One significant experience can change how we respond in the future. But so can smaller experiences repeated over time.

This can be particularly relevant for children who experience persistent pain, fear of movement, reduced confidence or avoidance of activities. Sometimes the thing a child is protecting themselves from isn't injury at all — it might be falling, failing, embarrassment or being laughed at.

Avoidance can feel protective in the short term. But it can also reduce opportunities to discover:

“Actually… maybe I CAN do this.”

The hopeful part is that the nervous system remains adaptable.

Through gradual, safe, meaningful and successful experiences, we can provide new information — opportunities to build confidence, explore movement and support participation.

This isn't about forcing a child through fear or simply telling them that something is safe.

It's about helping to create experiences from which their nervous system can learn.

The nervous system continually adapts to the experiences it has.

Next in this series: Interoception — the often overlooked sense that helps us understand what is happening inside our body.

If you have any questions or would like me to explore a particular part of this in more detail, please let me know in the comments.

Does your child struggle to keep up in sports, playground games, or new movement challenges?

This class is especially helpful for children who:

• Struggle to stay consistent with exercises at home

• Are ready to move on from 1:1 sessions into a supportive group setting

For many families, home programmes can be difficult to maintain — not because anyone is doing anything wrong, but because life is busy and exercises can feel repetitive.
This class provides a dedicated weekly space to practice these skills in a more engaging and supported way — taking some of that pressure off at home.

For children moving on from 1:1 therapy, this is a valuable next step — helping them build independence, apply their skills in a more dynamic setting, and begin to navigate movement alongside peers.

Each session is guided by physiotherapy principles, targeting strength, balance, coordination, and body awareness — even though it feels like play.

Children are informally assessed through observation, and activities are adapted throughout the block to support their progress.

Parents also receive a simple home exercise guide based on class activities, making it easier to carry over progress into daily life.

Sessions are playful, engaging, and pressure-free, helping children build confidence in a way that feels fun, not clinical.

Each child works at their own pace while benefiting from being alongside peers.

The goal is simple — to help your child feel more capable, confident, and willing to take part in movement.

Places are limited to keep the group small and supportive.

Groups are starting in April.

📩 Send me an email to see if this is the right fit for your child.
