At 14 years of age, Senan Vaughan helps his parents, Marion and Fergus, to care for his two younger siblings, 11-year-old Abby, who has an intellectual disability, and eight-year-old Eoghan, who is non-verbal and autistic.

“We would be lost without him,” says his mother Marion. “He helps in so many ways and is always watching out for his sister and brother. With Abby, he helps with her hygiene needs when I’m not around, he helps to feed her, does her homework with her, keeps her safe and plays with her. Also, he might pick her up from school or get her into the car, teach her how to put her seatbelt on and to turn on the TV — so many little skills to help her be a little independent.

“Eoghan is a different ballgame because of the non-verbal aspect, so there is a safety issue with him, and he cannot be left on his own. Someone has to have their eye on him all the time, so if I’m busy with Abby or cooking the dinner or something, Senan will be the one to do that.”

In 2024, the teenager won the Dublin Young Carer’s Award, and his mother says that it was so well deserved, and they were very proud of his achievement.

“It was an amazing achievement, not just for him but also to recognise the work that all the young carers around the country do,” she says. “I think most people don’t realise how much they actually do behind closed doors, as they wouldn’t have any idea of the needs which have to be catered for. So it was a really big honour for him to get the recognition, and we were so proud of him.”
