Many inspirational folk have passed recently, however I cannot let Wendell Berry go without mentioning his name here. The Peace of Wild Things is one of his most famous poems, for good reason. Many of you will have heard it spoken out loud amongst the trees.

Say hello to Christine Prescott 👋

Christine is one of five Mayo-based artists who have been mentored by curator Marianne O'Kane Boal in the lead up to our current exhibition, Soft Fascination, marking the culmination of the Bolay Programme 2025.

The title ‘Soft Fascination’ was developed through group discussion and suggested by Christine Prescott. This concept has informed Prescott’s artwork, particularly her site-responsive practice of ‘forest-bathing’, and it has a broader resonance for the Bolay artists.

'Each of the artists has provided work for the exhibition that aligns with the theme of ‘Soft Fascination’. Christine Prescott’s work epitomises the soft fascination response. In her wine drawings and installations with garlic skins, the very act of making is slowed down, repetitious, meditative and nourishing. She uses her work to create a soft space of reflection where she embraces a slower pace of production'. Marianne O'Kane Boal, Curator

Christine Prescott’s work is both meditative and ritualistic. She uses natural materials and handcrafted processes to create both sculptural and two-dimensional forms that explore sites of nurture and nourishment. Prescott received a BFA from the University of Southern Queensland (2000) and a PGDip from the Victorian College of Arts, Melbourne (2002). She has exhibited throughout Australia, Ireland, Germany, Singapore and Indonesia. Her work has been supported by the Australian Council for the Arts, the Arts Council of Ireland and Mayo County Council Arts Service. Prescott’s solo exhibition of new work, Rites of Homing, is showing at the Custom House Gallery, Westport Quay from 9 July - 9 August, 2026.

The five artists exhibiting are Genevieve King; Christine Prescott; Caroline Reapy; Bridget Ryan; and Ian Wieczorek. 

The exhibition includes a diverse range of art forms and closes Sat 22 August - do drop in to see the work before it closes 🙂

You’d be most welcome! I will be talking about how Forest Bathing has been as essential for my creative process as it has been to nurture feelings of home and belonging within the landscape of Ireland. Expect an informal conversation encompassing a love of plants, place and handmade processes 🌱

Join us for an engaging event with artist, Dr. Áine Phillips in conversation with Christine Prescott and Katerina Gribkoff, whose solo exhibitions explore our relationship with landscape, ecology and belonging through deeply material, process-led practices.

Christine Prescott will discuss Rites of Homing, her first solo exhibition in Ireland, reflecting on migration between Australia and Ireland through sculptural assemblages and works on paper created using harvested organic materials, weaving, stitching and meditative mark-making.

Katerina Gribkoff will speak about A garden is a seed itself, an exhibition inspired by five years of cultivating a dye garden in the Burren. Using plant-based dyes, textiles and photography, her work explores the connections between gardens, biodiversity, craft and place.

Together, the artists offer insights into practices rooted in slowness, care and the natural world. Hear about their research, creative processes and the ideas behind their exhibitions, followed by an audience Q&A.
