Humans Were Not Designed to Lose Weight
We spend a lot of time frustrated that weight loss feels so hard. The truth is, it's supposed to be hard β because your body was never designed to lose weight. It was designed to survive.
Built for Scarcity, Living in Abundance
For most of human history, food was inconsistent. Feast or famine wasn't a diet trend β it was reality. The people who survived were the ones whose bodies were exceptional at storing energy when food was available, because they never knew when the next meal was coming.
That biology hasn't changed. But the environment has. We've gone from unpredictable food scarcity to constant, engineered abundance β hyper-palatable food available 24/7, requiring zero effort to obtain. Your body is still running ancient survival software in a world that no longer matches it.
Your Body Doesn't Know the Difference
When you drop calories hard or diet aggressively, your body doesn't interpret that as "getting healthier." It interprets it as a threat. Hormones shift, hunger signals intensify, metabolism adapts downward, and energy is preserved wherever possible. This isn't a willpower failure β it's a deeply intelligent survival mechanism working exactly as intended.
This is also why extreme, restrictive approaches so often fail long-term. You're not fighting laziness. You're fighting millions of years of evolutionary programming that is, quite literally, trying to keep you alive.
So What Actually Works?
If the body resists rapid, forced change, the solution isn't to fight harder β it's to work with the system instead of against it:
Small, sustainable deficits rather than extreme restriction, so the body doesn't perceive a threat
Strength training to protect and build muscle, which improves body composition and metabolic health regardless of the scale
Consistent protein intake to support satiety and preserve lean tissue
Sleep and stress management, since both directly influence hunger hormones and fat storage
Patience over intensity β slow, steady change is more likely to stick because it doesn't trigger the survival response
The Real Shift in Mindset
The goal isn't to override your biology through brute force
