Made by Hand: The artisans keeping alive

Mother of pearl work has been part of Bethlehem’s craft life since the 17th century. Artisans cut, carve, and polish the shell by hand, a skill that takes years to master.
شغل الصدف جزء من حِرَف بيت لحم من القرن السابع عشر. الحرفي بقصّ الصدف وبحفره وبلمّعه بإيده، وهاي صنعة بدها سنين لتتعلمها.
In Nisf Jubeil, a small village northwest of Nablus, young women revived ceramic craft in a workshop opened in 2015. The first women trained went on to teach the ones after them, and each piece is hand-painted with designs inspired by the village’s landscape.
في نصف جبيل، قرية صغيرة شمال غرب نابلس، بنات القرية رجّعوا صنعة الخزف بمشغل انفتح سنة ٢٠١٥. أول بنات تعلّموا، صاروا هنّ يعلّموا اللي بعدهم، وكل قطعة مرسومة بالإيد برسومات مستوحاة من طبيعة القرية.
Olive wood carving is a Bethlehem craft dating back to the 4th century, passed down through families for generations. At the Holy Land Handicraft Cooperative in Beit Sahour, artisans in family-run workshops shape each piece by hand from local olive wood.
حفر خشب الزيتون صنعة بيت لحميّة من القرن الرابع، توارثتها العيلات أب عن جد. في تعاونية الأرض المقدسة للحرف اليدوية في بيت ساحور، الحرفيين بورشاتهم العائلية بشكّلوا كل قطعة بإيدهم من خشب الزيتون البلدي.
In the Naqab, weaving has always been women’s work, from spinning the wool to weaving the rug on a traditional ground loom. At Lakiya Negev Bedouin Weaving, women support their families through this craft.
في النقب، النسيج طول عمره شغل النسوان، من غزل الصوف لحد ما يطلع البساط على النول الأرضي. في مشروع اللقية للنسيج البدوي، النسوان بعيلوا عيلاتهم من هالصنعة.
Hebron has been known for its leather industry for generations. Jelld sources its leather from the Zaatari family’s generations-old tannery in Hebron, and every piece is stitched by hand.
الخليل معروفة بصناعة الجلد من أجيال. “جِلد” بتجيب جلدها من مدبغة عيلة الزعتري بالخليل، اللي إلها أجيال بالمصلحة، وكل قطعة بتنخيّط بالإيد.
