ADI - Advancement of People with Disabilities & Rehabilitation for All Major-General (Res.)

By reimagining rehabilitation, ADI is advancing ability for all - empowering children, adolescents and adults with severe disabilities and providing cutting edge therapeutic and recovery services for anyone touched by disability. By advancing ability, ADI empowers Israel’s most vulnerable individuals – children, adolescents and young adults with severe disabilities – to reach their greatest lifeti

me potentials. ADI is also reimagining rehabilitation, providing cutting edge therapeutic and recovery services to individuals needing inpatient and outpatient care following an accident or health event. ADI’s teams of professional staff and volunteers at ADI Jerusalem and ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran are pioneering and sharing new ways to transform the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families. ADI also advocates, educates and leads efforts nationally and globally on disability inclusion, disability equity and providing rehabilitative care with dignity and a focus on the future. The ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran rehabilitative village in Israel’s south and the ADI Jerusalem residential center comprise a continuum of loving care from infancy and childhood through adulthood, ensuring that residents with multiple disabilities and complex medical issues receive the medical and rehabilitative care and educational, vocational and social opportunities they need to reach their fullest potentials. At the same time, ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran, which offers a host of rehabilitative solutions for individuals from all backgrounds and levels of need, is undergoing radical growth to meet the country's rehabilitative needs. The Harvey & Gloria Kaylie Rehabilitation Medical Center at ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran, the first rehabilitative hospital in the Negev region, is a state-of-the-art rehabilitation, research and social center that will establish a model of community-based inclusive health services, increase the number of Israel’s rehabilitative hospital beds dramatically, bring quality care to the underserved residents of the south, and create more housing and jobs in the Negev, marking the beginning of a brand new era of medical and economic strength for the State of Israel. Doron Almog leads ADI as Chairman of the organization, Avi Wortzman serves as CEO of ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran, and Shlomit Grayevsky serves as CEO of ADI Jerusalem.

‘ADI’ (pronounced ah-dee) is the Hebrew word for a radiant and multifaceted jewel, a name that reflects our expansive vision and broad scope of activities, including disability care, rehabilitation, research, employment, education, community services and Tikkun Olam. It also speaks to the importance and great value of our mission to care for the most precious members of our society – those who cannot care for themselves.

🏆🏀 ADI'S PARASPORT CHAMPIONS! 💪🏻♿ And you thought the NBA Finals were exciting! 🤩 Last week, ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran's wheelchair basketball team beat their rivals, Beit Halochem Jerusalem, by a score of 54-44 to claim Israel's National B League Wheelchair Basketball Championship! 🎉 The heated finals match was the perfect ending for two teams who have exchanged first place repeatedly throughout the season. With more than 100 screaming fans from the rehabilitation village in attendance, ADI Negev's truly diverse and multitalented team made an impressive fourth quarter push to jolt a comeback and seal the win. Established three years ago, ADI Negev's wheelchair basketball team boasts a roster of 16 players, women and men ranging in age from 11 to 41, all of whom are outpatients at the Kaylie Rehabilitation Medical Center at ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran, including several war-wounded IDF soldiers. The team provides these passionate patient-athletes with opportunities for disability empowerment and advancement within an unmatched supportive familial framework.

Team member Yagel Weizman, a 21 year-old resident of Ofakim battling a nervous system disease, has been a core member of the team since the beginning and expressed jubilation following the big win. "My illness hit me at the end of 12th grade at a pretty critical time in my life, just before I would have been drafted to the IDF. Being hospitalized primarily with people much older than me and getting up every day to do the same physical therapy exercises was debilitating. And then, basketball came into my life at ADI Negev. I enjoyed it immediately and looked forward to training every day. It gave me meaning at a time when my body was really weak. I would throw the ball up and not be able to reach the basket at all. But I practiced, presevered and trusted in G-d and my coaches, and I made improvements that allowed me to make meaningful contributions to the winning team." 🙌🏻 🥇

📸 🤩 A FANTASTIC PHOTO FINISH! 🎓 🎒 As the school year comes to a close, the students at ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran's special education school and their parents enjoyed a beautiful end of year party, complete with gifts, games, music, a photo booth and an ice cream sundae bar. But the sweetest treat of all was reflecting on how much each child has grown and progressed over the course of this crazy year. There's no stopping a determined child with an incredible support system! 💪🏻❤️

🛳️ CRUISING TOWARDS TIKKUN OLAM: ❤️♿ Last week, special education students from ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran joined their peers from the nearby Merhavim Regional School at the Ashdod Marina for a fun-filled friendship cruise! The exciting expedition was part of ADI's national 'Tikkun Olam Program,' which provides neurotypical high school students with opportunities for consistent, long-term engagement with peers who are living with disability - going on exciting and stimulating trips as well as enjoying copious amounts of quality time through everyday activities at the rehabilitation village. These regular encounters allow friendships to form and meaningful progress to be made, for everyone involved. If we are to make real change for the disability community, we must ensure that our next generation of young leaders understands that their responsibility lies far beyond awareness - they must venture into the world-altering realm of genuine relationship building. 🫂

🌱 CULTIVATING EMPATHY & INCLUSION: ♿ Working in partnership with the Merhavim Regional Council and dozens of local schools, ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran welcomes hundreds of elementary and middle school students to the village each week to learn about planting and harvesting at the Organic Farm, as well as proper animal care and a variety of scientific concepts at the Safari Petting Zoo and Therapeutic Horse Stable. Along the way, they are also tasked with leading activities for students from ADI's special education school and integrated kindergarten, experiences that help them internalize the importance of compassion and inclusion. By providing these passionate pupils with tangible opportunities for encountering disability and allowing them to ask their burning questions at a young age, they are primed to continue advancing acceptance throughout their lives. At ADI, every resource is utilized as a tool to promote empathy, empowerment and education! 💚💪🏻🧠

🫁 RYAN'S DREAM COME TRUE: ☀️ 🌊 ⛱️ Ryan, a resident in ADI Jerusalem’s Ventilation Ward, was born healthy and enjoyed a typical childhood until a severe car accident changed his life forever. After years of intense rehabilitation and numerous challenges, he is now experiencing life-changing growth opportunities every day at ADI. Recently, he shared a simple dream with his teacher: “I want to visit the beach, breathe in the ocean air, and feel the water.” Without any hesitation, ADI's professional staff began figuring out how to turn Ryan's dream into a reality. Moshe Ben-Zeev, the Head Nurse of ADI Jerusalem's Ventilation Ward, joined forces with Magen David Adom’s 'Ambulance of Wishes' Program to give Ryan the beach day of his dreams. Accompanied by his teacher and a dedicated nurse, Ryan arrived at the beach with a megawatt smile that didn’t leave his face for a moment. Thanks to MDA’s incredible paramedics and a specially adapted beach wheelchair, Ryan was able to relax in the cool ocean waves, feel the warm sand between his toes, and experience so many things that had felt out of reach for so long. This picture perfect beach day is an experience that Ryan will cherish forever. 💚

👨🏻‍🤝‍👨🏼 JOINED AT THE HEART: ❤️ Yaki and Yaniv are longtime residents of ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran whose unbreakable bond is a powerful source of empowerment, hope and healing - for them and anyone who knows their story. Though both young men live with severe developmental disabilities, they have built meaningful lives filled with purpose and connection over nearly two decades at the rehabilitation village. Together, Yaki and Yaniv participate in a vast array of rehabilitative activities, create beautiful handmade crafts in their daily vocational arts workshop, and have discovered a sense of calm and belonging that neither of them knew was possible before arriving at ADI. But their friendship has provided the added strength and stability they have needed during sad, scary and uncertain times. Two years ago, Yaki lost his father, and the grief led to severe emotional and behavioral struggles. ADI’s team of therapists surrounded Yaki with compassionate support and specialized animal-assisted therapies that allowed him to slowly process the pain and rediscover joy. Through it all, Yaniv stayed by his side, patiently playing a key role in Yaki’s healing journey. And when Yaniv struggled with fear and anxiety during times of war, Yaki was always by his side to offer a hug and the calming presence he desperately needed. This dynamic duo comforts and encourages each other with unparalleled love and understanding, and they are always the first to notice when the other is struggling. It's almost like Yaki and Yaniv have their own fraternal frequency. Witnessing this wonderous wavelength at work is awe-inspiring, life-affirming and absolutely magical. ✨

🐶 PUPPY LOVE: 💕 ADI residents and special education students enjoy a rich schedule of cultural and leisure activities and supplementary therapy sessions, including the very popular Canine Therapy Program. During these sessions, the staff works together with a professional trainer who brings specially trained dogs to meet with residents on an ongoing basis. The staff assists in interfacing between the dogs and the residents, as a sense of trust and camaraderie is established between them. Playing and interacting with the dogs stimulates the residents and helps them develop their cognitive abilities and fine motor skills. The importance of these experiences cannot be overstated. Dogs offer a sense of safety and boundless unconditional love that is hard to find elsewhere, and many residents respond to the dogs more than any other therapy. For our ADI family members, these cute canine companions are critical elements of their personal growth and social advancement! 🐕

🌸 AN EMPOWERING SHAVUOT BAKE SALE!🧁🥧 Just ahead of Shavuot, Central New Jersey resident Cindy Baruch ran a bountiful bake sale that raised more than $5,000 to support the recovery of the heroic war-wounded IDF soldiers and civilians undergoing rehabilitation at the Kaylie Rehabilitation Medical Center at ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran - the first and only fully dedicated rehabilitation hospital in southern Israel. After more than a month of planning, Cindy, her sister, Pam Birbach, Pam's daughters, Tammy and Elissa, and their family's matriarch, Sheila Deer, filled the social hall of Congregation Ohav Emeth with table after table of cakes, cookies, brownies, babkas, muffins, challahs and every other sweet treat and mouthwatering confection imaginable, lovingly prepared by a veritable army of generous and supremely talented volunteers. The Jewish community in Highland Park and Edison came out in droves to support ADI and bought out the bake sale - more than 200 decadent and delicious homebaked items in all! 🍪🍰🍞 WE ARE SO GRATEFUL to this exceptional community for stepping up to empower our ADI family members and ensure that we can continue to provide the highest-level medical, rehabilitative and emotional care available to the hardest hit residents of the Negev. Thank you for your sweet solidarity! 🙏🏻❤️ AM YISRAEL CHAI! 💪🏻🇮🇱
