AKIM was founded in 1951 by parents of children with intellectual disabilities. AKIM operates 67 branches in both the Jewish and the Arab sectors. A place to belong can change the entire experience of a school break.

During AKIM Israel’s day camp in Rishon LeZion, a child who often finds group activities challenging chose to join a shared creative activity. Given the space and support to participate in his own way, he connected with the group on his own terms.

AKIM Israel’s day camps take place during the summer and school breaks, giving children with intellectual disabilities opportunities to participate, connect, create, and enjoy meaningful experiences alongside their peers.

Three years since the horrors of October 7.

We remember the people with disabilities who were brutally murdered, and the heroes who lost their lives trying to protect them.

We remember Carmela and Noya Dan, a grandmother and granddaughter murdered at Kibbutz Nir Oz. Noya was on the autism spectrum.

We remember Ruth and Erick Peretz, a father and daughter murdered at the Nova music festival. Ruth was a young woman with intellectual and physical disabilities and a student at AKIM Haifa's Gan-Or.

We remember their lives, their families, and all those we lost.

May their memories be a blessing.

Today, three years after the horrific events of October 7, 2023, we bow our heads in remembrance.

We mourn the lives that were brutally taken and remember those who fell defending others and our country. We hold their families, their loved ones, and all those forever changed by that day in our hearts. Their absence and the pain of October 7 remain with us.

The children of AKIM Israel’s Dekalim Aftercare program in Har Nof, Tiberias, marked this solemn day through artwork dedicated to the memory of the fallen and centered on unity, friendship, and mutual support.

Their creations remind us of the importance of standing together, caring for one another, and carrying the memory of those we lost with us.

🎭 From rehearsals to one of Israel’s leading theater festivals.

Last week, Open Heads, AKIM Israel’s theater troupe, performed at the Acre Fringe Theater Festival, bringing their work to the stage alongside artists from Israel and abroad.

Open Heads is part of AKIM Israel’s wider theater program, where artists with intellectual disabilities create, rehearse, perform, and contribute to Israel’s cultural landscape.

🌿 Sukkot reminds us that a community is strongest when there is room for everyone.

Just as the Sukkah brings people together under one roof, inclusion means creating communities where people with intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to learn, work, lead, make their voices heard, and participate fully in every part of community life.

Summer at AKIM is about equal opportunities to participate, connect, explore, and enjoy new experiences.

When special education frameworks close for the summer break, AKIM Israel’s local branches throughout Israel host day camps and summer programs for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

From day trips and recreational activities to social events, shared meals, community outings, and overnight camps, participants have opportunities to spend time with friends, discover new places, build connections, and take part in a full and active summer.

These programs also provide important continuity and support for families during a period when many regular services are unavailable.

With continued support, AKIM can expand these opportunities and ensure that more children and adults with intellectual disabilities can experience a summer filled with friendship, connection, and meaningful experiences.
