🎯 Why A.T. Still Broke the Rules of Medicine
Behind this quote is a powerful story of heartbreak.
In the mid-1800s, Dr. Andrew Taylor Still was a practicing physician when an outbreak of spinal meningitis took three of his children in a single month.
Watching them pass away despite receiving the “best” medical care available changed him forever. He realized the mainstream medicine of his day simply wasn’t enough. (At the time, doctors routinely relied on toxic chemicals like arsenic, bloodletting, and dangerous drugs like co***ne and o***m to mask pain rather than cure it.)
He refused to accept a system that failed when it mattered most. So, he walked away from conventional medicine.
For the next few decades, he immersed himself in anatomy, engineering, and the “laws of nature.”
His breakthrough? He realized that the body is an interrelated machine, beautifully designed with all the tools it needs to heal itself, as long as its structure is properly balanced. 🕊️
I’ve been working as a massage therapist since 2014, and I love the power of manual therapy. But it’s this exact evolutionary philosophy behind Osteopathy that pushes me to dive deeper every day, to understand what is truly CAUSING the pain, rather than just treating the symptoms.
