"Adverse childhood experiences (or ACEs) are the single greatest unaddressed public health threat facing our nation today." - Dr. Robert Block, former President of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
What this quote says that a child who goes through ACEs such as physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; physical or emotional neglect; parental mental illness, substance dependence, incarceration; parental separation or divorce; or domestic violence are significantly more likely to get cancer, heart disease, suffer from depression or even take their own lives.
Scientific studies are proving this yet our public health system is behind. In this inspiring TED talk, Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris talks about what needs to be one for the children that are growing up now.
But what about us, adults who grew up with ACEs that were never treated nor acknowledged? We must first heal ourselves so that we don't inflict the same damage our parents, teachers, and environments with all their good intentions, may have inadvertently inflicted upon us.
