Surgery Performed on a Beating Heart; Patient Returns Home in 72 HoursтАФSNMC Sets a New Record
Agra: Sarojini Naidu Medical College (SNMC) has set a new milestone in its 172-year history by successfully performing its first-ever тАШBeating HeartтАЩ (OPCABG) bypass surgery. This complex operation was conducted by Dr. Sushil Singhal, a Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon in the CTVS Department, and his team.
Ratan Lal Sharma, a 66-year-old resident of Bodla, had been battling severe heart disease for the past six months. Two of his main coronary arteries were completely (100 percent) blocked, and his cardiac function (Ejection Fraction/EF) had dropped to a mere 35 percent. Despite the extremely high risks involved, the medical team accepted the challenge and performed a successful surgery, giving the patient a new lease on life.
The surgery, which lasted approximately three hours on the night of April 13, 2026, utilized the тАШBeating HeartтАЩ techniqueтАФa method in which the bypass procedure is performed while the heart continues to beat, without stopping it. This marks the first successful surgery of its kind at SNMC.
The most remarkable aspect of this achievement was the patient's rapid recovery. Following the surgery, the patient was discharged from the hospital on just the second day (within approximately 72 hours)тАФa stark contrast to the standard protocol, where patients typically remain hospitalized for 5 to 7 days after such procedures. According to experts, this is a rare occurrence in the medical world.
The patient, who was economically underprivileged, did not even possess an Ayushman Card; nevertheless, his entire treatment was provided completely free of cost under the "Asadhya Rog Yojana" (Scheme for Incurable Diseases). A surgery that would typically cost between тВ╣3 to тВ╣4 lakhs in private hospitals was performed for free un
