One of the products that can be extracted from or is . is extensively used in for frying food. In addition to cooking, corn oil is used for purposes as , , etc.

The primary grinding of maize results in separation of germ, which is part of liquid consisting of starch and fibre. The germ thus separated is de-watered, dried and pressed to extract oil.

Starch making process is very interesting and intuitive. 4 key products are extracted from maize, viz. starch, oil, protein and fibre.

Maize is steeped in aqueous sulfur dioxide to hydrate and soften the kernel. On primary grinding of the steeped maize, germs are separated from the liquid in a process called de-germination. The remaining constituents are further processed through grinding and sieving to separate starch slurry and fibre.

Depending on the requirement, starch slurry is dried to make native starch or the slurry is processed to make specialty starch for specific industrial application.
