The Amanaska Yoga & sambhavi Mudra
Amanaska MEANS when there is no maan [mind]. When one’s maan [mind] is Switch off , there will be no thoughts. A state when there is no thought. this is simple meaning of amanaska.
The Amanaska Yoga describes sambhavi Mudra as a technique for inducing the state of unmani [unmani is a synonym for samadhi] by the arousal of kundalini [shakti] . The hatha pradapika points out that the word sambhavi Mudra is a synonym for susumna, which is the central nadi that runs through the chakras and through which kundalini travels when awakened.
The word sambhavi Mudra means ‘ which leads to sambhu’. this technique is practiced to directed kundalini through susumna nadi to be united with sambhu (one of the name of lord Shiva ).
in the Amanaska Yoga, this mudra was first taught to the primal sakti, Uma (the wife of Shiva) by Shiva.
The mudra involves fixing the gaze and the necessity of doing this in order to attain laya and amanaska, Though the gaze is held steady, it weakens until it does not rest upon any object then it becomes calm and the flow of conceptuality is cut off completely. The eyes are open but the gaze gradually turns inward until the Yogi sees the Self in.
The hatha pradapika states that no duality is experienced when unmani arises. Yogi who is in unmani state cannot hear the sound of a conch or a drum - his body becomes like a log of wood . yogi becomes lifeless like a piece of wood in laya and sahaja . sambhavi Mudra is essential for the attainment of the state of amanaska.
In the Amanaska Yoga, it is described as: ‘The fist above, the gaze below, the left above, the head below, (the Yogi) will become liberated in (this) life through using it .
sambhavi Mudra has no specific gazing point, it is advises that the gaze be fixed between the eyebrows in sambhavi Mudra.
In the metaphysics behind sambhavi Mudra, the sun in the abdomen is equivalent to the Alchemist’s heating chamber, and the moon, situated close to the root of the palate, is the cooling chamber. When the body is in its upright position, the nectar of the moon drips down on to the fire of the sun and is lost. the average ‘upright ‘person grows old as their nectar diminishes and eventually dies when their moon is empty. By turning the body upside down, the Hatha Yoga not only prevents the nectar from falling into the sun, one is able to replenish it by combining this practice with other techniques. when the nectar in the Yogi’s moon is replenished, the body is rejuvenated and ‘so affords him javanmukti’[liberated] .
the Amanaska Yoga is describing sambhavi Mudra - ‘the navel above, the palate below, the sun above, the moon below, it is claimed that success in the practice of amanaska will stimulate the Yogi’s nectar and cause it to flow through susumna (possibly) with prana .
The Hatha texts give a variety of locations for the Yogi’s moon. For example, in the Goraksasataka , it is located at the base of the palate and in the shiva samhita, at the top of mount Meru (the spine).
