Doctor... she did potty in her pants!

And then this little 1.8-year-old looked at her parents and proudly announced...

"Potty!"

Most parents notice the accident.

As a pediatrician, I noticed something else.

She recognized what had happened.
She labelled it correctly.
She communicated it to her parents.

That is an important developmental milestone.

Children usually learn toileting in stages:

• They pass potty without any awareness.
• Then they realize it after it has happened.
• Next, they begin telling you before they pass stool or urine.
• Finally, they reach the potty or toilet in time.

So if your toddler proudly announces "Potty!" after the event, don't just think about the mess.

Think about the milestone.

This is often the perfect time to gently introduce potty training—without pressure, punishment, or force.

Every accident is not a setback.

Sometimes it is your child's way of saying,
"I am beginning to understand my body's signals."

Same medicine… different bottle… different strength!

A mother came to me confused because the paracetamol brand I had previously advised was not available at the pharmacy. She bought another brand—but was scared to give it to her child.

This is an important lesson for every parent: don’t identify paracetamol only by its brand name. Check the generic medicine, its strength/concentration, and the correct dose for your child.

Two paracetamol bottles can contain different concentrations, so the same number of mL may not always mean the same dose.

When in doubt, check the label and confirm the correct dose with your pediatrician rather than guessing.
