According to Ayurveda, the three doshas, or fundamental energies, are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These doshas are derived from the five universal elements—space, air, fire, water, and earth—and govern all physical, mental, and emotional functions. While every person has all three doshas, one or two are typically dominant and form an individual's unique constitution, known as their prakriti.
The key to good health in Ayurveda is maintaining a balance among these three doshas. An imbalance, or vikriti, can be caused by factors like diet, lifestyle, stress, and environmental changes, and can lead to illness.
The three doshas
Vata
Vata is the energy of movement, composed of air and space. It is often called the "King of the Doshas" because it governs all biological activity in the body.
Pitta
Pitta is the energy of transformation, made up of fire and water. It governs metabolism, digestion, and the absorption of nutrients.
Kapha
Kapha is the energy of structure, stability, and lubrication, formed from the elements of earth and water. It provides the body with strength and immunity.
