Maybe this isn’t a career crisis. Maybe we’re finally questioning whether the life we’ve built is actually the life we want.

Career. Relationships. Money. Health. Identity.

The questions are normal. But having the capacity to sit with those questions is a different thing.

When we’re constantly running on survival mode, it’s easy to push them aside, choose what’s familiar, and keep going.

Building nervous system capacity isn’t about eliminating stress or becoming calm all the time.

It’s about having more room to pause, explore, make conscious choices and eventually create a life that allows you to thrive.

And yes, for me, thriving also means having the courage and capacity to move towards work and a life that genuinely feels meaningful to me.

What are you questioning these days?

7/7 — Spirituality ✨

For me, spirituality isn’t about having all the answers.

It’s about having purpose, perspective, and something bigger than the stress of today.

When life feels overwhelming, sometimes zooming out reminds me: this moment is not my whole story.

Research also suggests that a stronger sense of meaning and purpose is associated with better wellbeing and resilience.

And that’s why spirituality is one of the 7 things I prioritise for my nervous system health. 🤍

What gives you a sense of meaning when life gets overwhelming?

6/7 — Sleep

If you’re ambitious, high-functioning and used to pushing through… sleep can become the first thing you negotiate away.

But sleep isn’t just “time when you’re not working.”

It’s a fundamental part of how your brain and body recover.

Research shows that insufficient sleep can increase stress reactivity, while stress can also disrupt sleep, so it can become a rather annoying cycle.

And for those of us with ADHD, sleep can be an especially important piece of the puzzle.

I’m all in for breathing exercises, yoga, meditation and other regulation practices.

But sometimes the most supportive thing you can do for your nervous system is not another technique.

It’s going to bed on time. 😂

Be honest: are you a sleep protector or a sleep negotiator?

5/7 – Humour and Play

For a long time, I thought taking life seriously was a sign of maturity.

Now I make space for laughter too.

Not because it solves every problem—but because my nervous system wasn’t designed to stay in survival mode all the time.

A funny conversation.
A goofy moment with friends.
Laughing until your stomach hurts.

These moments don’t erase stress, but they can help shift our physiology, strengthen connection, and remind us that life isn’t only about getting through the next task. Research suggests laughter can help reduce stress and support emotional wellbeing, making it a valuable complement to other healthy habits.

💙 When was the last time you laughed so hard you forgot about your to-do list?

The goal isn’t to have a calm life. The goal is to build a nervous system that can meet life with more flexibility.

4/7 – Connection 🤍
7 things I do to prioritise my Nervous system health

I’ve lived alone for almost a decade.

And honestly… I enjoy my own company.

But one thing I’ve learnt is that my nervous system doesn’t thrive in isolation.

So I make it a point not to stay alone for too long.

Sometimes that means meeting a friend for coffee.
Sometimes it’s spending time with my nieces.
Calling my parents.
Having dinner with my siblings.

Nothing extraordinary.

Just meaningful human connection.

Our nervous system is wired for connection. We don’t have to be surrounded by people all the time, but we also don’t have to carry life entirely on our own.

For me, connection is one of the seven lifestyle practices I prioritize to support my nervous system.

3. Conscious breaks

We often look for a quick technique to help us feel better.

And yes, breathing exercises, grounding, or a few minutes of mindfulness can absolutely help.

But if the rest of your day is spent rushing, multitasking, ignoring your body’s signals, and pushing through exhaustion… it’s unrealistic to expect one five-minute practice to carry you through.

Our nervous system isn’t only influenced by what we do for five minutes.

It’s shaped by how we live the rest of the hours too

For me, that means taking conscious breaks throughout the day.

Because my body wasn’t designed to be “on” all day.

Sometimes it’s simply pausing, taking a few breaths, noticing my body, stretching, stepping away from the screen, or simply staring at the sky for 2 mins.

Small moments of recovery, repeated consistently, often matter more than chasing the next “magic” technique.

2 Body awareness

I used to think stress only lived in my mind.

But my body knew long before I did.

Tight shoulders.

A clenched jaw.

Holding my breath while working.

Feeling exhausted even after a weekend.

I ignored those signals because I thought they were normal.

Now, I see them as information, not problems.

Body awareness isn’t about constantly scanning yourself for what’s wrong.

It’s about noticing what your body has been trying to tell you all along.

You can’t support what you don’t notice.

7 things I prioritise to support my nervous system health

1. Self-compassion - It isn’t about letting yourself off the hook. It’s about getting off your own back.

For years, I believed being hard on myself would make me more productive.

Instead, it kept me overwhelmed.

When we’re constantly criticizing ourselves, our brain can interpret that inner dialogue as another source of threat. While self-compassion doesn’t eliminate stress, it can reduce the extra layer of stress we create through harsh self-judgment and help us recover more effectively after setbacks.

One of the biggest shifts in my nervous system journey wasn’t another technique.

It was learning to become a kinder teammate to myself.

💙 Which is harder for you: showing compassion to yourself or to others?
