When a baby cries, our instinct is to do more…rock faster, try multiple things, find a quick fix.
But sometimes, the body is simply asking for regulation, not stimulation.
This gentle technique works by activating your baby’s natural sucking reflex.
When the pinky finger (clean, nail facing down) softly touches the upper palate, it can trigger a calming response in the nervous system, often helping the baby settle within moments.
Why this works:
The sucking reflex is deeply connected to a baby’s sense of safety, feeding patterns, and nervous system regulation. Supporting this reflex can bring a sense of familiarity and ease to the body.
However, it’s important to remember, this is not about “stopping” the cry, but about supporting what your baby is communicating.
⚠️ A few things to keep in mind:
• Always ensure your hands are clean and nails are trimmed
• Be extremely gentle — never insert forcefully
• Let the baby accept or reject the touch
• Avoid if your baby shows discomfort, gagging, or oral sensitivity
Every baby is different. Persistent crying, excessive drooling, feeding challenges, or difficulty settling can sometimes indicate underlying tension or nervous system dysregulation.
This is where gentle approaches like Craniosacral Therapy at The White Elephant Clinic in Indiranagar, Bangalore can support deeper balance.
