Introduction

Papaya is one of the most valuable tropical fruit plants and has gained an important place in Unani medicine because of its digestive, hepatic, anti-inflammatory, vermifuge and nutritive properties. Although it is not described extensively in classical Unani literature due to its introduction into the Indian subcontinent after the medieval period, modern Unani physicians have incorporated it into practice based on its temperament (Mizaj), pharmacological actions, and clinical usefulness.

Almost every part of the plant—including ripe fruit, unripe fruit, leaves, seeds, flowers, latex, and roots—possesses medicinal value.

Introduction

Patharchat (also known as Pattharchatta, Zakhm-e-Hayat, Air Plant, Cathedral Bells, Life Plant, Miracle Leaf) is a succulent medicinal plant widely used in traditional systems of medicine. Although it is not among the most extensively described drugs in early Arabic-Persian Unani texts, it has long been incorporated into the Indo-Unani Materia Medica because of its remarkable wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, lithotriptic, and haemostatic properties.

The plant is especially valued in Unani practice for disorders of the urinary system, wounds, inflammation, bleeding, and certain hepatic and gastrointestinal diseases.
