•Distribution – SMOI has partnered with six pivotal international manufacturers in the field of Mobility Assistive Technology (MAT). The products distributed are of the highest quality and are customized as per client’s physical and environmental needs.
•Service Delivery –SMOI provides structured clinical assessments for clients including home evaluations before providing them custom fit MAT devices. The guidelines used have been devised by WHO and other leading educational institutions such as University of Pittsburgh.
•Continuing Education – SMOI conducts continuing education events by bringing in pivotal educators and international companies thus providing a national platform for collaborative and networking opportunities for the Indian industry (both for profit and non-profits alike).
•Research & Development - This is very important for the Indian consumers as one cannot blindly adapt western models but need to create their own keeping in mind the Indian infrastructure and mentality. SMOI have already secured a contract with University of Pittsburgh to co-ordinate the manufacturing and performing of in home user trials for a low cost power wheelchair.

An update regarding the luxury tax on wheelchair parts and accessories - thanks to Vaishnavi Jayakumar from Disability Right Alliance, the issue has received tremendous interest from the news agencies. Along side this PR campaign, our company is also petitioning the GST council to provide clarity on this GST Injustice towards people with disabilities. Hoping the government takes notice! As a service provider for customized wheelchair technology, it is our moral responsibility to share a very concerning taxation being imposed on wheelchairs and accessories by the Government of India. For those who are not aware - buying a wheelchair now attracts 5% GST and if you need clinically relevant accessories such as pressure relieving cushion, backrest, headrest etc, it is now considered a luxury item and attracts 28% GST. It baffles us to know that buying ordinary cushion or pillow has a much lesser GST of 18%.

India, having ratified UNCRPD, is obligated to treat assistive technology for a person with disability as a 'right and not luxury'. Calling 'Viklang' a 'Divyang' does not do away with the fact the disability rights representatives in the GST council have severely messed up. We wonder if the government ministries formed to provide social justice and empowerment for people with disabilities, are even aware about this blunder?

Would request all to please share and propagate the economic injustice being done to people with disabilities.
