NIUM Integrates Unani Principles with Fit India Drive for World Bicycle Day 2026
BENGALURU, June 7, 2026 — The National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM) under the Ministry of Ayush, Govt of India, led a high-impact mobilization for the "World Bicycle Day 2026 – Sundays on Cycle" campaign, an initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. The drive served as a strategic bridge between the classical Unani doctrine of Riyazat (physical exercise)—one of the six essential prerequisites for health—and modern national fitness and environmental goals.
Though NIUM Director Professor Saiyad Shah Alam was away on an official tour in Delhi, his dynamic leadership inspired a "total-institution" turnout. The event engaged a diverse, cross-functional coalition, democratizing the concept of fitness across all institutional levels. Participants included:
• Academic, Administrative & Clinical Leadership: The Deputy Medical Superintendent, Head of TST, Clinical Registrars, Administrative Officer, and Library cm documentation Officer.
• Scholars & Operations: PG scholars, with a significant presence of female scholars, alongside institutional security and electrical personnel.
• Community Legacy: Children of NIUM staff members.
By synthesizing traditional health wisdom with 21st -century ecological sustainability, NIUM highlighted cycling's role in personal wellness and carbon footprint reduction. The Nodal Officer hailed the collective spirit of the faculty, staff, and families as a successful realization of the "Fit India" vision.

NIUM, GHAZIABAD OBSERVED WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026
National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Ghaziabad, observed World Environment Day 5th June 2026 on the global theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” As part of the observance Director, Prof. (Dr.) Saiyad Shah Alam led the plantation drive. Speaking on the occasion the Director highlighted the close relationship between environmental conservation, climate resilience, and human health in the light of Unani principles. He further emphasized that the Unani System of Medicine advocates harmony among humans and nature, while the concepts of Mizaj (temperament) and Akhlat (humours) are closely linked to air, water, climate, and the natural environment. Director explained that Unani medicine promotes preventive healthcare, balanced nutrition, physical activity, environmental cleanliness, and the sustainable use of natural resources. Participants were encouraged to adopt eco-friendly practices such as tree plantation, water conservation, waste reduction, recycling, and biodiversity protection. Faculty members, PG Scholars and the NIUM, Ghaziabad staff actively participated in the programme and took an environmental pledge. The NIUM reaffirmed its commitment to promoting health, environmental awareness, and sustainable development through education, research, healthcare services and community outreach initiatives.

BENGALURU– The Working Group-11 (WG-11) BIS, on “Herbal Unani Toothpaste” convened a physical meeting on June 4, 2026 at the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Bengaluru, followed by an industrial visit to the Himalaya Wellness Company on June 5, 2026, to accelerate the development and standardization of the product under Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
The meeting was convened by Dr. Usama Akram (Research Officer S-3, CCRUM, New Delhi) and Dr. Mustehasan (Research Officer S-3, CCRUM), both members of WG-11. They held deliberations with Dr. Hamiduddin, Associate Professor & HoD, Dept. of Ilmul Saidla (Pharmacy), NIUM Bengaluru, who is also a Principal Member of BIS and WG-11 member. Under the auspicious presence of In charge Director NIUM Prof. Ghulamuddin Sofi and Prof Abdul Nasir Ansari. Dr. Mahe Alam (Joint Director & Coordinator, AYD-04 Unani Sectional Committee, Ayush Department, BIS) and Dr. Aafreen Afzal (Consultant Unani, BIS, New Delhi) and other members attended the proceedings online.
The key purpose of the two-day initiative was to facilitate technical discussions, collaborative inputs, and on-ground assessment for framing BIS standards for the herbal Unani toothpaste formulation. On June 5, the working group visited Himalaya Wellness Company’s main R&D and production centre in Bengaluru, interacting with senior R&D and formulation officials. NIUM GHAZIABAD OBSERVES WORLD NO TO***CO DAY
National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Ghaziabad observed World No To***co Day 2026 by organizing an awareness programme on to***co prevention and ni****ne addiction control through Unani medicine for the OPD patients. The programme was based on this year’s global theme, “Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Ni****ne and To***co Addiction.” Experts explained that to***co companies often attract adolescents and young adults through misleading advertisements, attractive packaging, and flavoured ni****ne products. Doctors stated that ni****ne causes strong physical and psychological dependence, making to***co cessation difficult. They further highlighted that to***co smoke contains toxic chemicals harmful to the lungs, heart, blood vessels, nervous system, liver, and immune system, while passive smoking also poses serious health risks. Unani physicians explained that to***co disturbs the natural Mizaj (temperament), weakens vital organs, and causes chronic diseases by creating imbalance in Akhlat (humours). Experts discussed the role of Ilaj bil Ghiza, Ilaj bit Tadbeer, and Ilaj bid Dawa during de-addiction and recovery. Antioxidant-rich diet, exercise, Dalak (massage), breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and adequate sleep were recommended for reducing ni****ne withdrawal symptoms. The programme concluded with an appeal for collective efforts to build a to***co-free society.

NIUM Hospital Observes World No To***co Day with Awareness Program

In observance of World No To***co Day (31st May), the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM) Hospital organized an awareness program on May 30, 2026, at 1130 AM in the Hospital Seminar Hall. The initiative aimed to educate patients, attendants, students, and healthcare staff about the harmful effects of to***co use.
The program underscored the grave health risks associated with to***co consumption, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory illnesses, and other life‑threatening conditions. NIUM consultants and Senior Nursing Officer emphasized the importance of adopting a to***co‑free lifestyle and highlighted the significant health benefits of quitting to***co.
Participants were informed about available to***co cessation services and support systems designed to help individuals overcome addiction. The interactive session encouraged attendees to actively spread awareness within their families and communities.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from patients, attendants, hospital staff, and students. Organizers reaffirmed NIUM Hospital’s commitment to public health and preventive healthcare through regular awareness initiatives.
In continuation of this commitment, NIUM Hospital is initiating a dedicated To***co Cessation OPD, in line with the guidelines of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The OPD will provide counseling services and Unani treatment modalities to support smokers and to***co users in overcoming addiction and adopting healthier lifestyles.

Bengaluru, May 21, 2026 — The National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM) Hospital, Bengaluru, hosted a comprehensive training program on Biomedical Waste Management (BMW), Healthcare-Associated Infection Control (HIC), and Hygiene Practices, and Environmental Cleaning with Spill Management at the NIUM Seminar Hall on Thursday.
The program was designed for consultants, teaching faculty, hospital staff, Ph.D. scholars, and postgraduate students, with the aim of strengthening awareness and improving infection prevention and patient safety measures across the hospital.
During the sessions, experts highlighted the critical importance of proper biomedical waste segregation and disposal, preventing healthcare-associated infections, strict adherence to hand hygiene protocols, and maintaining a clean, safe healthcare environment. They emphasized that ensuring quality healthcare and minimizing infection risks is a shared responsibility among all healthcare professionals.
The event saw enthusiastic participation and lively interaction from attendees, reflecting NIUM’s strong commitment to continuous professional development and excellence in patient care.

VISIT OF Ms. MONLISA DASH, JOINT SECRETARY AND DR. MUKHTAR QASMI, ADVISOR (UNANI), MINISTRY OF AYUSH VISIT TO NIUM, GHAZIABAD

National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Ghaziabad welcomed Ms. Monalisa Das (IFoS), Joint Secretary, and Dr. Mukhtar Qasmi, Advisor (Unani), Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, during their official visit to the Institute on 18 May 2026. The visit focused on reviewing the Institute’s academic, clinical, research, and administrative activities. Prof. (Dr.) Saiyad Shah Alam, Director, NIUM briefed the dignitaries about patient care, evidence-based research, medicinal plants, pharmacological studies, public health awareness programmes, and Randomised Clinical Trials. The delegates inspected academic departments, Unani Arcade, smart classrooms, hospital wards, OPD and IPD services, diagnostic units, pharmacy, ECG, X-Ray Unit, and Central Sterile Supply Department. Ms. Monalisa Dash showed special interest in traditional Unani therapies including Cupping, Leeching, Spinal Spray, Spinal Irrigation, and UV Therapy. She also inaugurated the modern Ultrasound Unit. Ms. Dash urged the students to come out of their comfort zone. Dr. M.A. Qasmi appreciated NIUM’s efforts in promoting quality healthcare, scientific communication, and global recognition of the Unani system of medicine. He described Ms. Das as a trailblazer in the promotion and development of Unani System.
