In men, hair loss begins in the hairline and crown area. This may progress to involve the top part of the scalp.

In women, the hairline area is spared. Thinning occurs mainly in the hairline area.

What is chemical peel?

Myth: Using sunscreen can cause Vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble Vitamin. Also known as “sunshine vitamin” because the body can produce this vitamin from Cholesterol with sun exposure (Ultraviolet B or UVB)

Vitamin D can also be obtained from Food sources: Fortified cereal, Dairy products, fish oils, egg yolk, fish like salmon, sardines, and tuna.

Vitamin D increases absorption of calcium from the gut and helps in mineralisation of bones. Vitamin D deficiency can result in Osteoporosis or Osteromalacia in adults and Rickets in children.

Since UVB is required for the synthesis of Vitamin D, application of Sunscreen (by blocking UVB) may theoretically reduce Vitamin D synthesis. However, studies have shown that very short and limited exposure to sunlight is sufficient for Vitamin D production. And using sunscreen does not reduce vitamin D synthesis and helps your skin from sun damage.

If you have Vitamin D deficiency, it is advisable to increase your oral intake (food and supplements) rather than prolonged sun exposure (increased risk of skin cancer, sun ageing, sun burn, tanning, immunosuppression, pigmentation, etc)

Do you have oily or greasy skin?

Here are some DO’s and DONT’s:

- Do not wash your skin excessively or very frequently in an attempt to remove excess oil from your skin. Your skin needs some oil or fat to maintain a healthy skin barrier. Loss of skin barrier may cause dryness, itching, redness, sensitivity.

- Do not use scrubs in an attempt to reduce oil. This may lead to skin dryness, inflammation, worsening of acne.

- Do use a cleanser or salicylic acid containing facewash twice a day. Do not cleanse your skin more than twice daily. This will strip the skin of natural oil.

- Do apply a gel based or water based moisturiser and sunscreen regularly. Avoid applying thick cream or ointment based products and oil based products. This may cause acne breakouts or folliculitis.
