A clinical trial published in The BMJ found that intravenous iron before heart surgery for patients with anemia was associated with reduced need for blood transfusions, with 61% of patients in the iron group requiring transfusions compared with 68% in the placebo group. The study involving 955 patients also found that intravenous iron saved about 44 units of blood products per 100 patients and resulted in one extra day at home in the 90 days after surgery.
