- In India, sugar is refined using the the Double Sulphitation method. This is the most widely used and cheapest process of refining sugar as compared to other available process. However the major drawback of the Sulphitation proecsss is that Sulphur enters sugar during its refining process.
- In India the maximum permissible limit is 70 ppm whereas International standard (refined) is about 10 ppm
- More than the tolerance limit lead to a variety of respiratory diseases
- This fact is well-known and that is why many countries have banned this process involving sulphur. This is also the reason why Indian sugar cannot be exported to markets in the United States and Europe.
*What is the best options*
- honey, jaggery, brown and white sugar almost have the same calorie count
- Since all these increase sugar and fat percent in the body one needs to be really careful while consuming these sweet products
- jaggery and honey have minerals to offer while white sugar is simply empty calories
- Because of its molasses content, brown sugar does contain certain minerals, most notably calcium, potassium, iron and magnesium (white sugar contains none of these). But since these minerals are present in only minuscule amounts, there is no real health benefit to using brown sugar.
*Conclusion* –
The least is the best but I suggests sticking to 2-3 teaspoons of jaggery or honey every day and if you have sugar – either brown or white – don’t have more than 2 teaspoons. Though you should consult a *Dietician* or doctor for personal requirements
