Here’s what happens: when your cells stop responding properly to insulin, your pancreas makes even more insulin to keep blood sugar under control. Over time, this high insulin doesn’t just affect sugar — it starts disrupting hormones, fat storage, inflammation, and metabolism.
PCOS & IRREGULAR PERIODS : High insulin tells the ovaries to produce more androgens (male-type hormones), excess androgens can disrupt ovulation, which leads to missed periods, irregular cycles, ovarian cysts, and symptoms like facial hair and thinning hair.
BELLY FAT & OBESITY : High insulin is a fat-storage hormone. When insulin stays elevated, your body gets pushed into storing more fat — especially around the abdomen. It becomes harder to burn stored fat for energy.
FATTY LIVER : When blood sugar stays high and insulin is constantly elevated, the liver starts converting excess glucose into fat. That fat builds up inside the liver, leading to fatty liver disease.
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE : Insulin resistance can affect how your blood vessels relax and how your kidneys handle sodium and fluid. That can raise blood pressure over time, especially when insulin levels stay high for long periods.
ACNE : High insulin can increase androgen levels and trigger more oil production in the skin. More oil, more inflammation, and more clogged pores & breakouts
HYPOTHYROIDISM : Insulin resistance can make it harder for thyroid hormones to work properly in the body. Even if thyroid labs look “normal,” symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, low mood, and sluggish metabolism can still show up.
SLEEP APNEA
Insulin resistance is linked to weight gain, especially around the neck and belly, which can make breathing harder during sleep. It also worsens inflammation and metabolic dysfunction, both of which can contribute to poor sleep quality.
This is why insulin resistance is not just a “blood sugar issue.” It can show up as hormone problems, skin issues, weight gain, liver stress, and sleep problems.
