On the occasion of World Digestive Health Day 2026, this year’s theme — “Don’t Flush the Signs Away” — is a timely reminder that many digestive diseases begin with subtle symptoms that are often ignored or dismissed.

Persistent abdominal pain, altered bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, blood in stools, difficulty swallowing, bloating, jaundice, or prolonged acidity may appear trivial initially, but they can sometimes indicate significant underlying gastrointestinal disease.

Early recognition and timely medical evaluation can make a crucial difference — not only in improving outcomes but also in preventing complications and saving lives.

As healthcare professionals, we must continue to promote awareness, encourage open conversations about digestive health, and emphasise the importance of screening, early diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment.

Digestive health is not merely about comfort — it is central to overall health and well-being.

Let us use this day to spread awareness and remind everyone:
Do not ignore the warning signs. Don’t flush the signs away.

Breaking the Stigma, Advancing Care: World IBD Day 2026** 🩺💜
Today, May 19th, marks **World IBD Day**—a global initiative to raise awareness, show solidarity, and advocate for the millions of individuals living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
As a surgical gastroenterologist, I see firsthand the profound impact that Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis have on a patient's quality of life. IBD is not just a "stomach ache"—it is a chronic, often invisible, and deeply challenging immune-mediated condition that requires comprehensive, multi-disciplinary care.

🔍 Key Focus Areas for Early Intervention:

* **Recognize the Red Flags:** Persistent abdominal pain, chronic or bloody diarrhea, unexplained weight loss, and severe fatigue are signs that should never be ignored.

* **The Power of Early Diagnosis:** Early detection and precise diagnosis (via colonoscopy, imaging, and biomarkers) are critical to preventing long-term complications like bowel obstructions, strictures, or severe malnutrition.

* **Advanced Treatment Horizons:** From tailored biologic therapies to precision **Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery**, modern medical advancements allow us to effectively manage complex cases, preserve bowel function, and help patients achieve long-term remission.

Living with IBD requires immense resilience. Today, let’s commit to breaking the stigma surrounding gastrointestinal health, supporting cutting-edge research, and ensuring patients have access to timely, advanced care.
If you or a loved one are experiencing persistent GI symptoms, please do not suffer in silence. Early intervention changes outcomes.

This May, we’re shining a light on a group of conditions that often hide in plain sight but affect millions during the most productive years of their lives.

As we approach WORLD IBD DAY on May 19th, it’s time to talk about Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) - specifically Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

🛑 The Silent Struggle of the Young

IBD predominantly strikes in the prime of life—teens, 20s, and 30s. These are the years meant for education, building careers, and starting families. When IBD goes undiagnosed or mismanaged, it doesn’t just cause physical pain; it halts productivity and dreams.

🔍 The "Tuberculosis" Trap

In many regions, particularly in India, the prevalence of Tuberculosis (TB) creates a unique diagnostic challenge. Because intestinal TB and Crohn’s Disease share remarkably similar symptoms and imaging results, misdiagnosis is common. Patients are often mistakenly put on anti-TB medication (ATT) while the actual inflammation from Crohn's continues to damage the gut.
Early differentiation by a specialist is crucial to avoid unnecessary treatments and long-term complications.

⚠️ When should you see a Gastroenterologist?

Many patients wait months or even years because they mistake their symptoms for "simple indigestion" or "food poisoning." If you or a loved one experience these symptoms for more than 2–4 weeks, it’s time to seek a specialist:
Persistent Diarrhea: Chronic loose stools that don't go away.
Abdominal Pain:Recurring cramping or pain, often in the lower belly.
Blood in Stool: Any signs of re**al bleeding or mucus.
Unexplained Weight Loss: Dropping weight without trying.
Chronic Fatigue: Feeling exhausted even after resting.
Recurrent Fever: Low-grade fevers accompanying digestive issues.

💡 Awareness Saves Futures

Early screening—which may include blood tests (CRP), stool tests (Calprotectin), and a colonoscopy—can lead to a timely diagnosis. With the right management, IBD patients can lead full, productive, and vibrant lives.
Let’s bridge the gap in awareness so that no young life is held back by a late diagnosis.

If you are experiencing chronic digestive issues, don't wait. Consult a gastroenterologist today.

I recently had the opportunity to address the employees of TI Cycles (Murugappa Group) through an online webinar organized by SIMS Hospital on the Importance of Gut Health for Overall Well-being.

During the session, we discussed the realities of modern corporate life — the constant hustle, workplace stress, demanding timelines, and performance pressures that often lead people to neglect one of the most important aspects of health: their gut.

I spoke about practical and sustainable habits for maintaining a healthy digestive system, focusing on:
• What to eat
• When to eat
• How to eat

We also discussed the crucial role of stress management, adequate sleep, and regular physical activity in maintaining good gut health.

The session was highly interactive, with many thoughtful questions from participants. It was encouraging to see such enthusiasm and awareness about preventive health.

I am very happy to have been part of this initiative aimed at educating corporate professionals about the importance of maintaining a healthy gut for overall well-being.
