Professor T Krishnamacharya | Born 18 Nov 1888

Professor Tirumalai Krishnamacharya is known worldwide as the father of modern Yoga. He revolutionized Yoga in the 20th century and made it accessible to everyone. He was an outstanding Vedic scholar who was versed in all the six philosophies of Indian thought, as well as in other Vedic disciplines such as Ayurveda and Astrology.

Later in life, he opened the doors of Vedic Chanting, previously only allowed to male Brahmins, to every sincere student, independent of age, religion, nationality, caste or gender. He stood for a profound yet practical approach to Yoga, where all the tools of Yoga are implemented and wisely adapted to meet the needs, abilities, goals and requirements of each individual. He understood the body not just as a physical construct, but as part of a holistic entity.

He propagated a Yoga that is not superficial but works on and with the subtle aspects of energy, what the Yogis call Prana. During his life he showed that Yoga can be used as a holistic practice, a way of life that connects body, mind and spirit, a spiritual path, and also as an extremely potent healing tool. Apart from being a Yoga Teacher, Krishnamacharya was known as a powerful healer and helped many people with ailments in body, mind and spirit.

His students, including Indra Devi, Pattabhi Jois, BKS Iyengar and his son TKV Desikachar, testify to the significance of his life’s work and to the breadth of teachings that he stood for. They underline his position as one of the most significant Yoga masters, teachers and therapists of the modern era.

HOMAGE

Mrs. Radha Sundararajan
It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Mrs Radha Sundararajan, who lost her battle with COVID and breathed her last, on 14 May 2021 at 6.15am.

Mrs. Radha Sundararajan was a longtime student of TKV Desikachar and Menaka Desikachar and a well-known teacher of the tradition. She was an eager chanter and a woman full of energy. There was never ever a dull moment around her.

She was the director of Vedavani, the former chanting department of the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram. In 2012, she joined the Krishnamacharya Healing & Yoga Foundation and was the General Manager of Operations and also a senior Vedic Chanting Teacher. She represented the KHYF in many international workshops and training programs involving chanting and left a deep impression in the hearts of our students worldwide. She also contributed to some of the Vedic Chant publications for Media Garuda, the publications department of the KHYF. She retired from this position in 2015 and continued to guide students privately from her home.

We remain ever grateful for her contributions to our school and the tradition. She will be sorely missed by many of her students, and most certainly by our staff and teachers of the Viniyoga tradition!

It breaks our heart that someone so devoted to chant succumbed to COVID, which has so much to do with the lungs and throat.

Let us pray for her peace now as she rests in the laps of the creator, and pray for her family at this challenging moment of transition!
