Outcomes of Robotic Surgery:
1) Early QOL - Quality Of Life outcomes:
On the evening after undergoing a robotic surgery, when you ask your patient regarding pain, they often reply -
“I dont feel the pain or find the wound (port site). Where have you operated?”
Pain is often described as discomfort in the throat, likely the endotracheal tube (no blame on anaesthesia intended here).
In most of the Thoracic, Head & Neck robotic procedures, patients will have oral liquids in the evening after surgery, depending on their recovery.
They are Transferred from ICU to the ward after day 1 assessment & are discharged anywhere between day 2 to 7 based on the type of procedure.
2) Late QOL outcomes:
Wound healing is cleaner. We are able to start adjuvant therapy at the earliest.
After completion of treatment, they return to work early and often do not have chronic pain of surgery.
3) Oncologic outcomes:
Robotic surgery excels in all these parameters which is proven by evidence. -
Improved lymph nodal yeild, margin clearance, adequacy of resection, ability to preserve vital structures / organ function, access difficult anatomy.
- As the implementation and pe*******on of robotic systems & units improve; accessibility, awareness, affordability will further enhance.
- This ensures that Robotic surgery is available for all, irrespective of barriers and we shall thrive in pursuing this endeavour.
