Hair of Indians is different than Caucasians or blacks, otherwise they are technically similar in basic characteristics and development cycles
How Indian hair differs from hair of Caucasians or Blacks?

1. Indian hair follicles are straight similar to Caucasians. For Blacks, the follicles are curved causing the hair to be curly.

2. The Indian hair is more rounder than either Caucasian or Black hair.

3. Indian hair is thicker than either Caucasians or Blacks.

4. Indian hair is more resistant to breakage then either Black or Caucasian hair.

Hair facts

1. On average, an adult has over 100,000 hair follicles on our scalp.

2. The hair grows at about ½" per month.

3. We lose and replace about 50 to 100 hair per day.

Hair Structure

Hair grows like a thin cylinder out of follicle just below the surface of scalp. Next to follicle is a sebaceous gland that produces natural oil. This oil makes the hair look shiny.

All hair have three layers: Cuticle (outer layer), Cortex (Middle layer), and Medulla (Inner layer).

The cuticle is basically a protein called Keratin. For normal hair it is smooth. It is most exposed to the environment. It can get damaged by chemical treatment. The damage makes hair to look dull and rough, can result in breakage. This is transparent layer.

The cortex (middle layer) gives the color to the hair and provide the strength. When the cuticle layer is damaged, the cortex is exposed to the environment. It is weakened and results in hair splits or breaks. The color is due to melanin. With age, the melanin production slows down, and finally there is no melanin. Absence of melanin results in white or gray hair.

The medulla or innermost layer of the hair shaft is only present in thick hair.

Development Stages

There are three stages: Growth phase (3 to 6 years), Transitional phase (2-3 weeks), and Resting phase (3 months). At the end of resting phase, the hair sheds off, and new growth phase starts to replace the lost hair. If the hair lost is more than, the replacement, it results in thinning of hair or baldness.

Characteristics of hair

- Hair is porous. It allows the hair to absorb nutrients, and be treated chemically for bleaching or dying.

- Hair is elastic. It allows to be styled, blow dried.

- Hair receives nourishment from the blood vessels in the follicle. That's why the diet is important.

- Heredity effects the color, density, and the shape of follicle

- Hormonal changes can cause loss of hair, example: postpartum hair loss
