What Can Cause Vomiting Blood?

Vomiting blood, also called haematemesis, can happen for several reasons. It usually indicates bleeding somewhere in the upper digestive tract, particularly the stomach or oesophagus (food pipe).

Common causes include:

Gastritis or inflammation of the stomach lining
Stomach ulcers
Severe heartburn or acid reflux
Liver disease related to long-term alcohol use
Irritation or injury to the oesophagus after repeated vomiting or severe coughing

Less common causes may include:

Cancer of the stomach or oesophagus
Certain blood disorders that affect clotting
Medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and blood thinners
Certain types of poisoning

Important: Vomiting blood should never be ignored. It can indicate significant internal bleeding and requires prompt medical evaluation, especially if the bleeding is heavy, recurrent, or accompanied by dizziness, weakness, or black stools.
