I spoke to a professional recently who said,
“I’m not unhappy… I just don’t feel excited anymore.”
He’d been in the same role for nearly five years.
Good salary.
Good team.
Good company.
So why couldn’t he bring himself to leave?
Because every time he thought about it, another thought appeared:
“I’ve already invested so much here.”
That’s the trap.
Not fear.
Not loyalty.
The belief that staying will somehow justify the years already spent.
The moment that caught my attention wasn’t what he said.
It was this:
“I used to come up with ideas. Now I just finish my work and wait for the day to end.”
When curiosity disappears, growth usually has too.
Sometimes the biggest career risk isn’t changing jobs.
It’s staying long enough to forget what you’re capable of.
