It has been scientifically observed that the eyes of a restless person or a mentally depressed person move very quickly and blink frequently. In the desperate urge to drink in more and more stimuli, we become confused and mentally anxious. The eyes of those who meditate blink less. They have a detached look. By gradually controlling the mind through meditation and deep breathing, we are able to gain detachment from the sights that surround us, thereby avoiding sensory overload.

By focusing on the navel center during meditation, we can gain control over our restlessness, and direct our vision inward to the immense beauty within, and we start to understand the profound spiritual truths to be found there. When we do look at the world again, we learn to see beauty everywhere in God's creation, in the people around us, even in the situations that confront us. We learn to appreciate our surroundings without becoming overly attached. Then we can proceed to enjoy the world without becoming enslaved.

The people who attain prajna ( wisdom) have no narrow- mindedness, no worldly mood. They are constantly engrossed in that which is all-pervading. Their inner and outer lives are full of tranquillity and peace. They are free from agitation and irritation. They are not disturbed or perturbed by loss or gain. They are free from all repentance and remorse.
Consider the business attitude of a banker. When people deposit and withdraw money, the banker is neither happy with deposits nor unhappy with withdrawals. He profits from the flow of all the money. In the same way, spiritual people neither forfeit inner peace with the material loss nor rejoice with gain. They are not expecting anything. They are free from agitation. In truth, nothing can be lost in the universe except character. When character is lost everything is lost.

One who strives for one's own evolution in an integrated manner is the real spiritual seeker. Spiritual life is not for dreamers. Spiritual treasures are hard-earned, and are harder to maintain. The joy and bliss we get through them cannot be taken away by anyone. We all are formless, yet dreaming that we have a form. We are like the waves of divine ocean. There are big waves and small waves, gentle waves and crashing waves, but all of them are really a part of the ocean. Our ego tells us we are separate entities, when, in fact, we are destined to merge with the Absolute. To experience who we are is to experience God.

The mind, due to our likes and dislikes, goes on thinking that there exists happiness or unhappiness in one object or another. The mind goes from place to place, from person to person, from one type of job to another, in constant search of lasting happiness. This happens because the mind has never been trained or instructed to go within where the real source of happiness lies.

The relationship of the individual soul with the Supreme Self is best illustrated by the example of the ocean and the wave. The wave is the modification of the ocean, yet it does not have an independent existence of its own. There is no separation between the wave and the ocean. Similarly we are born in the cosmic consciousness, we all are living on God's lap and we will again merge in God. Even if ocean is vast and unlimited, while the wave is small and limited, the essential nature of both the wave and the ocean is one and the same. The sense of separateness seeps in due to our ego and complexes. We see ourselves as separate waves, feel either big or small, and thus forget that in reality we all are waves born out of the same ocean. Yoga is to understand the relationship between the Supreme Self and ourselves.

The scriptures are not mere words. It is better to listen to the scriptures from the mouths of holy teachers than to just read them. When we listen to the scriptures from the mouths of the God-intoxicated, deeper insight and understanding occurs. A person filled pure love can bring forth the inner message of the scriptures.

Let us Pray

"O God, give me good company of holy people. Let their love change my life. To be in love is to change our demeanor and outlook. Let my demeanor be saturated in love; let my outlook be filled not with criticism, not with censure, not with judgement, but with love and forgiveness. Let my life be motivated by the company of holy people."

In our daily meditation, after having relaxed the mind and body through simple breathing and specific exercises, which are conducive to deep concentration, we merge silently with the univers, allowing our inner voice to be heard. In that silence, we gain tremendous peace, strength and even practical answers to the questions haunting us, whether these relate to our family life, our careers or our spiritual growth. If we really go within, we can constantly hear the voice of God.

How to be conscious of all our thoughts and activities?

We rarely think and act consciously. Animals have no choice and simply live by instinct. On the contrary, human beings should be conscious of whatever they are doing, because they do have a choice, discrimination, intelligence and rationality. How to carry out all our activities in consciousness? Spiritual life is a conscious lifestyle and it begins with conscious breathing. If you watch your breath and you are conscious of each inhalation and exhalation, you will be conscious of each thought and activity. Breath is constantly going in and out in the background of all your activities. If you are conscious of your breath and if you constantly watch your breath, you will succeed in being conscious of all your thoughts and all your activities.

Anything that happens in our lives is stored in our memory. Our memories can cause us many problems. We should be intelligent about our memories and arrange them like books on a shelf. The books you want to use or read are kept close at hand, while others that are not needed are kept elsewhere or even given to someone else. The big problem with our memory is that we remember what we should forget, and forget what we should remember. What should we remember, and what should we forget? We should forget and eliminate all of our negative qualities, such as anger, selfishness, jealousy, greed and unhappiness. Suppose you have some dirt on your hands and you want to clean it off. To do this, you will need some soap and water. You can wash your hands, and they will soon be clean. Similarly, to live a moral life is to be good, to see good, and to do good.

To sincerely contemplate our own impermanence can be very beneficial to our spiritual growth. When meditating, we should think, " O God, this could be my last meditation. Thus, let us unite so I will know we are one." Yes, it is only mental attitude, but it is an attitude that can deepen our meditation. Do you really know if you will be here tomorrow ? If you knew you were about to have your last meditation, would your thoughts drift off to shopping or some errands you have to run the next day? Would your mind be restless? No, you would use each moment of your meditation to achieve final communion with your Beloved. Imagine how beautiful your meditation would be. So maintain this attitude.

Where are the holy places? Traditional scriptures say that human values are tirtha that help us cross the world of trials and tribulations. Sometimes virtues like forgiveness, self-discipline and honesty are also considered tirtha.

Inwardly every part of body is holy. A further description of tirtha is atma-tirtha. The true holy places are not outside of us, they are within; they are known as atma-tirtha.

In a beautiful verse in the Jnana Sankalini Ta**ra (49), Lord Shiva tells Parvati:

Idam tirtham idam tirtham bhramanti taamasaa janah
Atma tirtham na jananti katham moksho varanan.

"Listen to me, my beloved, tamasic people go from place to place in the name of pilgrimage, but if they don't know atma-tirtha (the holy place within, the abode of the soul), how can they be liberated?"
