Dr. R. Vasudevan, a professor from Thiagarajar College of Engineering in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is widely known as the “Plastic Man of India” for his groundbreaking innovation. In 2002, he developed a method to reuse plastic waste in road construction, creating a solution that addresses both environmental pollution and infrastructure challenges.
His technique involves shredding discarded plastic items such as carry bags, packaging materials, and plastic cups. The plastic is then coated onto hot stone aggregates before being mixed with bitumen. This process creates stronger and more durable roads that can better withstand water, heat, and daily wear and tear.
One of the biggest advantages of plastic roads is their ability to resist damage caused by rain and moisture. The plastic coating reduces water absorption and helps prevent cracks and potholes, increasing the lifespan of the road. The technology also reduces the amount of bitumen required, making road construction more resource-efficient.
Over the years, thousands of kilometers of roads have been built using this innovation across states including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, and Puducherry. The success of these roads has earned recognition from government agencies and environmental experts.
