Week 3 Skin Health

Day 21 Skin care in newborns

Caring for a newborn’s skin is a delicate task. A baby's skin is about 20% to 30% thinner than adult skin, meaning it loses moisture faster and is much more susceptible to irritants and environmental changes.

The Golden Rule: Less is More

1)Avoid Fragrances:
As it can cause contact dermatitis

2) Skip the Bubbles: Bubble baths can be drying.

3) Avoid use of soap or body wash daily in winters

4) Use lukewarm water for bath . Hot water strips the natural oil making the skin dry.

5) Moisturize the skin within 3 minutes of patting the baby dry after a bath to lock in the hydration.

6) Avoid using antiseptics in bath water or to wash the clothes

7) Avoid use of powder on the skin

8) Avoid antiseptic and scented baby wipes

9) Avoid prolonged use of diapers , use for a short time when really needed eg travel , cold winter nights.
Ensure frequent change of diapers and airing the area.

10) Umbilical cord
Keep the area dry and clean It will fall off in 1-3 weeks

Week 3 Skin Health

Day 20 Skin care of Hands and Feet

The skin on our hands and feet is biologically different from the rest of our body. The palms and soles have a much thicker stratum corneum (outer layer) and no hair follicles, while the backs of the hands are thin and prone to early aging.

Hand Care: The "Constant Exposure" Zone
Our hands are the first to show signs of aging because they are frequently washed and rarely protected from the sun.

The Gentle Wash: Use soap-free cleansers. Harsh detergents strip the "acid mantle," leading to cracked skin and dermatitis.

The "Damp Skin" Rule: Just like the face, apply hand cream while your hands are still slightly damp to lock in moisture.

Sun Protection: It is advisable to apply sunscreen on the backs of hands before driving or going outdoors to prevent "age spots."

The Night Mask: For very dry hands, apply a thick layer of a ceramide-rich cream or petroleum jelly at night and wear cotton gloves to bed.

Foot Care: The "Pressure & Friction" Zone
Feet endure the weight of the entire body, leading to thickened skin (calluses) and dry heels.

Exfoliation for Thick Skin: Because the skin on the soles is so thick, physical exfoliation (like a pumice stone) or chemical exfoliants (like Urea or Lactic Acid) are necessary to remove dead cells.

Moisturizing Heavily: Creams for the feet should be "occlusive." Look for ingredients like shea butter, petroleum jelly, or 10-20% Urea.

The "Soak & Seal" Method: 1. Soak feet in lukewarm water for 10 minutes.
2. Gently scrub the heels.
3. Apply a thick ointment.
4. Wear cotton socks overnight.

Dry Between the Toes: While the rest of the foot needs moisture, the area between the toes should stay dry to prevent fungal infections (like Athlete's Foot).

Week 3 Skin Health

Day 19 Nail care

Healthy nails are more than just a cosmetic asset; they are a reflection of your overall health and a protective shield for your fingertips. Since nails are made of a tough protein called keratin, they require a balance of internal nutrition and external protection to stay strong.

1.Moisture is the enemy of nail strength. Frequent immersion in water can cause nails to swell and then shrink as they dry, leading to brittleness and peeling.
Wear Gloves: Always wear rubber gloves when washing dishes or using harsh cleaning chemicals.

2.Dry Thoroughly: After bathing or swimming, make sure to dry the area around your cuticles and under the nails to prevent fungal growth.

3.The cuticle is your nail’s natural protective barrier. It seals the gap between the skin and the nail plate to keep bacteria out.
Never Cut Cuticles: Cutting or aggressively pushing back cuticles can lead to inflammation and infections (paronychia)

4. _Smart Grooming Habits_
File in One Direction: Sawing back and forth with a nail file creates micro-fractures in the keratin. File in one single direction from the corner to the center.

Use the Right Tools: Use sharp nail clippers to trim nails straight across, then slightly round the corners in a curve. This prevents painful ingrown nails.

Avoid "Nail Tools": Never use your nails as tools to pry open cans or scrape off stickers. This creates mechanical stress that leads to splitting.

5.Acetone-Free Remover: Acetone is extremely drying for the nail plate. Opt for oil-based or "acetone-free" removers when changing your polish.

6.Give Them a Break: Periodically leave your nails "naked" for a week. Constant polish or gel applications can trap moisture and weaken the nail surface.

Week 3 Skin Health

Day 18 Hair Care Routine

Hair care is essentially the management of the hair shaft (the visible, non-living part) and the scalp (the living environment where hair grows)

1.Wash Frequency: There is no "one size fits all." If you have an oily scalp or live in a polluted area you may need to wash every other day. If your scalp is dry, twice a week is sufficient.

2.Apply shampoo primarily to the scalp. Massage gently with your fingertips (not nails) to break down oils.

3.Temperature Matters: Use lukewarm or cool water. Hot water strips the natural oils and leaves the hair cuticle open, leading to frizz and moisture loss.

4. Conditioning: The Protective Seal

Avoid the Roots: Only apply conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends. Applying it to the scalp can weigh hair down and lead to oiliness.

5.Leave in conditioner or serum to be used for dry frizzy hair

6.Loose hairstyle to prevent traction on hair follicles

7.Trimming of hair every 3 months to prevent the split from travelling up the hair shaft
