Who Is the Right Candidate for Thyroid Ablation? | Dr Ajit Yadav
Not every thyroid nodule needs surgery — and not every thyroid nodule is suitable for ablation.
Thyroid ablation, including Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), may be considered for selected patients with benign thyroid nodules that are causing:
• Neck pressure or discomfort
• Difficulty swallowing
• A visible neck lump or cosmetic concern
• Symptoms due to an enlarged nodule
• Certain overactive thyroid nodules, after appropriate evaluation
Before considering thyroid ablation, the nodule needs proper assessment with ultrasound, thyroid function tests and appropriate biopsy/cytology evaluation.
The goal of ablation is to reduce the size of the nodule while avoiding removal of the entire thyroid gland in appropriately selected patients.
If you have been diagnosed with a thyroid nodule and are wondering whether thyroid ablation or surgery is right for you, consult an experienced specialist for an individual assessment.
