Benefit of hospital pharmacists’ activities evaluated

Evidence of the clinical and economic potential of activities carried out by hospital pharmacists was presented in findings of a study by the Nova School of Business and Economics commissioned by the Portuguese Pharmaceutical Society (PPS) and supported by the Portuguese Association of Hospital Pharmacists, published this month: https://bit.ly/35ObpLA.

Activities included review and reconciliation of therapy, active collaboration in medical visits, evaluation of therapeutic alternatives or monitoring/pharmacovigilance of the use of (new) drugs, promotion of adherence, and obtaining savings during medicines procurement. Portuguese pharmacists across 7 hospitals were asked to keep a daily record of their activities and almost 200 days of detailed records were validated. It was found, however, that more than half of pharmacists’ time is spent on activities related to the distribution of medicines to inpatients (27%) and outpatients (15%), as well as on their production and preparation.

More pharmacists are needed in hospitals to provide more care activities that would lead to better health outcomes, the PPS says. An executive summary of the presentation of the study by the PPS is available here: https://bit.ly/3h0zxRS

Let us unite against antimicrobial resistance

As resistance to a wider range of drugs grows, the World Health Organization has broadened “World Antibiotic Awareness Week” to “World Antimicrobial Awareness Week”, which begins today.

“This year’s theme is ‘United to preserve antimicrobials’ and we invite pharmacists to help share the campaign messages, which include only taking antimicrobials with expert advice, continuing medication such as antimalarials and treatments for tuberculosis or HIV even during COVID-19, and practising good hygiene,” said FIP CEO Catherine Duggan.
