Post-Menopausal Syndrome and Its Management in Ayurveda
Post-menopausal syndrome refers to the group of physical, psychological, and metabolic changes experienced by women after the permanent cessation of menstruation. Clinically, menopause is confirmed after twelve consecutive months of amenorrhea and is associated with a decline in ovarian follicular activity and estrogen production. Although menopause is a physiological milestone rather than a disease, many women experience persistent symptoms that impair quality of life. These symptoms may include vasomotor instability (hot flashes and night sweats), sleep disturbances, mood disorders, cognitive decline, vaginal atrophy, dyspareunia, urinary incontinence, reduced libido, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, central obesity, insulin resistance, and increased cardiovascular risk. Modern medicine primarily manages post-menopausal symptoms through hormone replacement therapy (HRT), selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), bisphosphonates, antidepressants, and lifestyle interventions. However, due to concerns regarding long-term hormone therapy, many women seek safer, holistic, and integrative approaches such as Ayurveda.
In Ayurvedic classics like the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita, menopause is described as Rajonivritti, a natural event occurring as part of the aging process (Jaravastha). Ayurveda views this phase as predominantly governed by Vata Dosha, which naturally increases with age and leads to dryness, degeneration, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. The decline of reproductive tissue (Artava Dhatu) and overall tissue depletion (Dhatu Kshaya) are considered central to post-menopausal changes. Imbalance of Pitta may manifest as hot flashes and irritability, while Kapha imbalance can contribute to weight gain and metabolic sluggishness. Rather than targeting isolated symptoms, Ayurveda emphasizes restoring systemic balance through individualized treatment based on Prakriti (body constitution), Vikriti (current imbalance), digestive fire (Agni), and tissue health.
