Is it the baby blues, PPD, or PPA? 💭

Maternal mental health doesn’t look just one way, and symptoms can show up anytime during pregnancy or postpartum.

What you’re feeling might be:
• Baby Blues
• Depression
• Anxiety
✳️ Perinatal Mental Health Disorders also include OCD, bipolar mood disorders, PTSD, and psychosis. ✳️

The Baby Blues are short-term dips in mood caused by the changes of having a baby, and typically dissipate on their own. Depression and anxiety are common, temporary, and treatable, but they do require support.

Too often, parents experience symptoms like: irritability, racing thoughts, guilt, sadness, intrusive thoughts, or constant worry… and don’t realize there’s a name for it.

When we connect the dots, we make maternal mental health visible.
And when it’s visible, it becomes treatable, supportable, and understood.

💙 If you see yourself in this, you are not alone
💙 If you recognize this in someone else, check in

📺 The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Surgeon General released an advisory which raises national awareness about the growing risks associated with excessive and harmful screen use among young people.

It included a toolkit to reduce the negative impacts of harmful screen use with evidence based tools and strategies organized around the 5 Ds.

⭐️Discuss: Set expectations for all household members for healthy screen use. Discuss with youth what they are viewing, who they are interacting with, and how it makes them feel. Use parental controls and household rules that align with your goals.

⭐️Do: Model the healthy screen use behaviors you would like to see. Children and adolescents pay attention to the actions of their caregivers and trusted adults. Be conscientious about how much time you spend on screens and what type of content you consume. When using screens, do so together.

⭐️Delay: Delay screen time from the earliest age as long as possible and then establish and normalize age appropriate limits on time and content accessible. Parents and caregivers can also delay access to different devices by age.

⭐️Divert: Provide alternatives so screen use is not the default when children are bored. Redirect attention and provide opportunities for healthy activities, such as physical activity. Prioritize completion of desirable activities first, such as chores, homework, music, or sports before screen use.

⭐️Disconnect: Create regularly scheduled, screen free times in everyone’s day, such as mealtimes where everyone disconnects. Practice screen free time before bedtime for better quality sleep and avoid sleeping next to devices. Avoid multitasking with screens during activities. Detox completely from certain devices, media, or platforms when they have become a problem or when another goal is more important.

There’s a lot of misinformation about tick removal.

What you do after finding a tick matters.

❌ Don’t burn it
❌ Don’t twist or squeeze it
❌ Don’t cover it with petroleum jelly, essential oils, soap, or alcohol

✔ Use fine-tipped tweezers
✔ Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible
✔ Pull upward with even, steady pressure
✔ You may need to hold that pulling pressure for a few minutes to allow the tick to release without regurgitating

After removal:
• Clean the area
• Save the tick in a sealed bag if you want testing
• Continue monitoring for symptoms

Daily tick checks help catch ticks early and reduce risk.

Starting May 1, my lights are going dark for the birds!

It’s lights out for me all May, as I help my feathered friends migrate and fly safely across the U.S. It's a tradition I've continued since 2002 and my lights will be back on nightly starting June 1.
