Payal and Manvi carried out their first solo Wenlido workshops this month, training a total of 31 girls from the outlying villages. Working Deepa and Ravindra’s supervision they gained confidence in engaging with adolescent girls of mixed ages, helping them to feel comfortable and heard so they participate more openly

Leo Maislinger, our latest Austrian Civil Service volunteer has now completed his year and our team are sad to let him go because he fitted in so well and has been so helpful. In his final report he said: “The ten months of alternative civilian service abroad which I spent working with Nishtha, allowed me to become a lot more independent, both personally and at work. I think that I have become more open and understanding of people with different life situations and cultures and have learned how intercultural cooperation can work best.” Thank you, Leo!

Again, this year Rahul, who is a very experienced trainer from Pune, came to Nishtha to work with Vijay to make our three workshops for Adolescent village boys a great success. It is not easy to focus and make an imact oh a group of young boys but feedback such as this makes it worthwhile “These are things that we have never been taught in school, and no one else—whether teachers, parents, or friends—is ready to talk to us about them. We realized that many of us blindly follow myths, superstitions, and magical thinking instead of using critical thinking, and this is one of the biggest barriers to our personal growth and development.”

We are delighted to have completed four, two-day workshops for adolescent girls during the school holidays this month. The whole team pitched in to make this program a big success, enabling 61 girls to become more knowledgeable and self-assured. The girls said how they will go home and tell their mothers, who were reluctant to let them attend the workshop, how useful and fun it has been and how grateful they are to Ravindra, Vijay and our Doctors.

It was very helpful to have Anik, our latest intern from Lovely University for a few days helping out with our school and childrens programs and assisting Leo with repairs to our trampoline and basket ball nets at a time when our team were busy with holding workshops.

On the inspired initiative Ryan and his mother who run an organization called Soccer for Peace, we have been able to purchase 50 footballs with the soccer for peace logo which we have distributed to 13 local schools and 2 nunnery schools. Now the local children are all inspired to learn how to play football and follow the world cup!

On International Widows’ Day, a rally was organized to highlight the rights, welfare, and socio-economic concerns of widowed women. 125 women from the different villages and areas in which we work gathered at the Dharamsala main post office from where they marched silently down the busy main road to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. They carried placards bearing slogans and demands demanding proper implementation and accessibility of welfare schemes. Increase in pension amounts and timely disbursement of pensions, educational support and welfare measures for children of single women. The women’s appeal received a positive response from the District officers
