Hitāhitaṃ sukhaṃ duḥkham āyus tasya hitāhitam,

आयुर्वेद की परिभाषा

हिताहितं सुखं दुःखमायुस्तस्य हिताहितम्।
मानं च तच्च यत्रोक्तमायुर्वेदः स उच्यते॥
संदर्भ — चरकसंहिता, सूत्रस्थान 1/41

अर्थ: जिस शास्त्र में हित-अहित, सुख-दुःख, आयु के हित-अहित तथा आयु के स्वरूप और प्रमाण का वर्णन किया गया है, उसे आयुर्वेद कहा जाता है।
